Our dear friend Kika (Christine Garcia-Concheso) was diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer, Stage III, on June 18th. At this point, the only treatment available is chemotherapy. If she responds well and if cancer has not spread, she might be able to have surgery after several rounds of chemo, but the doctor suspects there are a few cancer spots on the liver too. We all know Kika, she is in severe pain, but always in a great mood and is enduring all the tests exceptionally well.

Housing Situation
Kika's house was severely damaged during the hurricane last year. There was significant flooding, and she lost almost all the renovations she had done to the house a few months before, including a brand new kitchen and flooring. She has been fighting with the insurance and just now got the approval to fix the house (although she did not get all the money she was asking for). She will start renovations soon and will try to sell the house as soon as it is done. Currently, her home has no kitchen, no living room, no washer/dryer and only one functioning bathroom. That was "fine" until she was diagnosed with cancer. Now she cannot stay there anymore, nor she can deal with the remodeling herself (to save money she was going to supervise it). We plan to rent her a small apartment, preferably near her son and his family immediately, since she will start chemo on July 13th. In the meanwhile and whenever she wants, she will stay at my house. She knows she is always welcome here (we set up a bedroom for her) and I will do everything I can to be with her at every medical appointment and treatment, but I know she would like to have her own place and be close to her grandson. By the way, Kika's son and his family live in a two-bedroom condo, so there is no space to accommodate Kika and her beloved dogs comfortably.

Work and Income
Work-wise; the situation is even tougher. Kika always worked as an independent contractor but has no new projects (nor she can take new projects right now.) So, she will have no income at all, but a very small retirement check.

Health Insurance and Medical Expenses
Her health insurance is Medicare, and she will have several out of pocket expenses. We also would like to get a second opinion from MD Anderson or John Hopkins in Maryland and to join medical trials around the U.S. that offer hope.

This gofundme campaign is to help us get through the next few months until her house is sold. She plans to use the house money to pay for her future expenses. Unfortunately, we cannot wait until she sells the house and, with no new project/work, she cannot afford to rent an apartment or pay for her mortgage, treatment, and medication.

I know Kika has some great friends out there and that you all will help her through this. Any amount is highly appreciated. I plan to post a few updates here, but if you would like to contact Kika and/or myself directly, please email TeamWinKika@gmail.com. We both have access to that email so that I can send updates in her behalf. Thank you all so very much.

Friends,

Kika had her third chemotherapy last Tuesday and has been doing better than after the first two treatments. This time, because of the severe adverse reaction she had following the second chemo, they reduced the treatment by 20% and we believe that did the trick. Now, all we want is for Kika to continue well enough to keep the chemo treatments every two weeks.

Thank you again for all the well wishes and donations.

Silvia

Friends,

It has been a while, and Kika went through a lot in the last few weeks. She is better now and, thanks to all of your donations, she has moved to a temporary apartment next to her son. Her beloved grandson stops by often, and they have a lot of fun together. Maria Helena, her stepmother, arrived from Brazil a week ago and is living with Kika full time.

Kika will restart chemotherapy next week, this time a little bit less potent than the last one to try to reduce the side effects. We are hopeful that this will make the treatment more bearable.

Kika enjoys thanking each one of you directly, but she wasn't able to type for these last few weeks, so I apologize. We will catch up soon.!

Friends, I am sorry I have not been sending many updates. Kika had a bad reaction to the second chemo (20 days ago). We had to go to the ER twice and she got admitted to the hospital last Thursday. Finally she was released today, but to a rehab clinic so she can get stronger (currently she can barely walk). I will keep you all updated. Thank you so much for all your donations!

My friends,

First of all, a big thank you to all of you that have contributed and shared this campaign. I have a tough road ahead, but your contributions for sure make the load a lot lighter. Generally, Silvia writes the updates, but today I want to share with you a little bit of these last few weeks.

I am on my second round of chemo right now. My chemo regimen includes 7 hours at the hospital and then for 46 hours at home, connected to a pump that gives me medication through my port. Tomorrow I have to go back to the hospital to have the pump disconnected. To tell you the truth, I feel pretty well during the chemo and for a few days later. But then... about five days after the chemo, the side effects start. I had pretty rough days last week. Awful nausea and stomach problems kept me awake for several nights. I was not able to eat or drink, got dehydrated and, for a while, I won't lie, life was miserable. I lost about 8 lbs. Then we talked to a Hospital dietitian at the University of Miami Sylvester Center, and she prescribed special supplements for chemo patients. A few days before my second chemo, I was feeling great. Now, I am waiting for the day 5 when I will probably have all the side effects again.

Thanks to your donations, I was able to restart the fixing up of my house (just enough to fix the hurricane damages). We expect it to be ready for sale in 2-3 months. Unfortunately, I was still not able to find an apartment to rent at the same building as my son, but I will keep looking.

I am attaching a photo of myself. Last Thursday I was well enough to finally used a gift card a friend had sent to me, and I went to the hairdresser to get a haircut and my nails done. It felt terrific to get out of the house and be pampered.

Friends, thank you all so much!
