Kids' Science Cafe' of Magdalena Village Move Kids

Magdalena is a small rural community with a population of about 1,000 residents.  The school is a 4-day PreK thru 12th grade institution housed on a single campus with an enrollment of approximately 350 students.  The school is 100% free breakfast and lunch. Over the 3-day weekend, there is no movie theater, strip-mall, swimming pool or even a skate park for children to engage their free time in.  Poverty is common and crosses several generations.  Drug use is also common place.
The Mayor of Magdalena request that I investigate opening a STEM-based experiential learning facility bent upon giving the youth of Magdalena a place to congregate, visit, and learn.  The Kids' Science Café, "where you go to order a desire, a dream, a career" was opened to provide for this need.  Currently, outreach and learning activities are conducted on Fridays between 10AM and 4PM with plans to broaden the hours and days we are open.
All teachers and staff work on a voluntary basis.  Most are licensed educators while others are professional in nature (scientists, engineers, subject matter experts).  It is our instructional paradigm  that project-based experiential learning is engaging, motivational, and rewarding while resulting in high-end achievement.  Further, that relationships with each other and adult mentors is an incremental necessity for both achievement and success.
Our requested funding is to support instructional equipment and  supplies.  It is our intent to introduce the young scientists of our small rural community to coding and data collection utilizing Raspberry Pi as a microprocessor base (Raspberry Pi 3 (B+ Ultimate Kit, $179 x 5)   with sensors (Raspberry Shake $499.99, Raspberry Weather Station, $171.23 ) the student learner builds and deploys (from SparkFun and Adafruit).  Our Café Students are currently enrolled in the Village Code Club.  The equipment and supplies will support parallel and  follow-on educational operations.
We thank you for supporting the Kids' Science Café.
