Kidney for Vietnam Vet/Fire Fighter

Donation protected
We are writing to you about our friend, Dan Landon, to let you know about his current health challenge and how you can help. This is not an easy letter to write, but we know that without sending this, someone who might be interested in helping won’t have the opportunity to save a life. Dan needs a KIDNEY TRANSPLANT due to his exposure to Agent Orange during his service in Vietnam. As a Seabee assigned to MCB 58 on the DMZ, he earned the Vietnam Campaign Medal, Combat Action Ribbon, the Vietnamese Service Medal with FMC Combat Insignia and One Bronze Star.

Dan has been dedicated to his community and his country over the years. Before serving in Vietnam he was a US Navy Reserve member. He worked as a BLM fire crew chief. He served as captain, training officer and first responder on the Shepherd Volunteer Fire Department. Dan has been involved with fire prevention and safety training throughout his professional career. He is currently unable to work as a private Loss Control Consultant in the propane gas industry and closed Safe Fire Training Co., as his end stage renal failure requires dialysis three times a week.

Dan and his wife, Charlene, must relocate to within a 6-hour radius of the transplant facility. This will necessitate maintaining their home in Billings, MT, plus additional living expenses of $26,000 while away from home awaiting a kidney. The unknown is how long Dan will have to wait for a donor. Once the transplant is complete, Dan will remain in Iowa for a minimum of 30 days. Necessary medications will cost upwards of $60,000. The transplant also requires quarterly monitoring for the first three years, which increases their travel expenses to $12,750. Total expenses are estimated at $98,750.

So how can you help? First, of course, consider being a kidney donor. Without a donor match, there can be no transplant. Contact Melissa, Unity Point Iowa Methodist Medical Center (515-241-4174) in Des Moines, where Dan is listed for a transplant. Thousands of kidney donors have given the “Gift of Life” and lead healthy, active, productive lives. They are true angels. Secondly, share Dan’s story through all your social media contacts and co-workers. Spread the word! If you are a business owner, please consider displaying Dan’s story.

Please help the Landons at this crucial time. Every dollar is a blessing.

Thank you for your support.
