Kibera Girls Soccer Academy (KGSA) is a community-based organization that provides free education, artistic programming, and athletic opportunities to over 120 girls annually who live in the Kibera slums of Nairobi, Kenya. Through active participation in education, the arts, and athletics, the students have the opportunity to develop a stronger confidence in their minds, bodies, and spirits – empowering them to become inspiring leaders in their own communities and country.
Soccer in Kibera is more than just a game, it is an opportunity to impart the importance of discipline, communication, and teamwork. In addition, it's a way to break down the gender barriers and roles between men and women in Kibera.
Lastly, KGSA also uses soccer as a vehicle to teach players how to use their bodies in a physical manner. Unfortunately, the reality in Kibera is that women are susceptible to, and at risk of physical assault. The soccer pitch is a space where girls can become comfortable with their strength.
I had the chance to meet the impressive and talented women playing for KGSA. I feel very strong about empowering young women, so we can create a better society. Thus I am launching a fundraising for the game allowances and training allowances for the players for the Senior Team that was recently promoted into the premier league (Football Kenya Federation Standings here).
The game allowances are important as they help to ensure the players can attend to the trainings and games instead of giving up on playing football to work and earn money during that time. Many of the players are the sole bread winners of the family and the allowances are critical to ensure they can perform well on the pitch during the games.
For 35 dollars you enable a player attend a week's training and a match.
