Khia's Leukemia Fight

Donation protected
In June 2017, cousins & roommates Sara & Jaime made the generous decision to temporarily take in their 10 year old niece Khia, due to some complicated family circumstances.  As the start of the school year approached, it became obvious that Khia would be with them for a longer time, and they enrolled her in school, becoming, for the first time in either of their lives, full time parents.

Khia settled into her new school and began making friends.  Khia is a smart, inquisitive, curious, spunky and sometimes mischievous kid, who quickly won over her teachers as well.

Thanksgiving week 2017, McKhia started running a high fever.  Sara & Jaime took her to the doctor, who drew blood and started running tests.  Determining there were some abnormalities in her blood, she was sent to the Sanford Children’s Castle for more tests.  Later that afternoon, November 27, 2017, Khia was diagnosed with AML (Acute Myelogenous Leukemia).  Their quick trip to the doctor instantly became a long term stay, and Sara and Jaime went from being happy single ladies to the guardians of a very sick little girl.

Three days later, Khia began her first round of chemo treatments.  She will have 4 rounds of 10 days of chemo, then recovery after each round.  After that, more tests will be done to determine how she’s responding to treatment and what further treatment needs to be done.

Sara & Jaime have always been abundantly supportive of their friends and family, and now we want to give back to them.  Their lives have been completely turned upside down.  Their employers have been understanding, but nonetheless, they’ve lost time at work and have added expenses because of this situation.  One or both of them has stayed with Khia since the first night in the hospital.  Even seemingly small costs, like having to buy cloth masks for Khia to wear because the hospital issued ones give her a headache, add up.

Because of the love and support Sara & Jaime have always shown others, her friends are starting this campaign as a way to offer support to them.  Any gifts to this campaign will be used for expenses directly related to Khia’s treatment and the support she needs.

Thank you for helping us to support them.
