Khan Jamal of Philadelphia started playing the vibraphone in 1964 and has been making music since working with the Cosmic Forces, Byard Lancaster, Sunny Murray, Ronald Shannon Jackson's Decoding Society, as well as Joe Bonner, Billy Bang, and others.
Jamal fought in vietnam and upon his return he founded Sounds of Liberation a band – and a social movement – formed in 1970 out of the Germantown & Mt Airy neighborhoods of Philadelphia. Sounds of Liberation were at the forefront of avant-garde jazz, Black expression, and Black Liberation. They put action behind their creative endeavors, generating a community force, and did work with a range of populations, from school children to inmates.
Khan's days recently have been filled less with music and instead the sounds of a ticking clock. Over the last 8 years , illness and doctor bills have been plaguing Khan and his family. After a stroke, his kidneys failed and has now been on dialysis for some time, while wait listed to receive a new kidney.
As a full time musician, this illness has impacted his ability to work and earn a living. If you are able to send a donation, it would be hugely appreciated. Your contributions directly support the potential to prolong Khan's life.
