Khaled Hamad's college tuition fund

This is your chance to help someone affected by the Syrian Crisis!

We are asking for help to fundraise for the college tuition of an incredible man: Khaled Hamad. Khaled has been accepted to Dalhousie University's Bachelor of Engineering program. He is from Syria, and is in need of $30 000 for his first year (college tuition and housing)! We have set our goal at $10 000, and would be very appreciative of donations! All donations will go towards Khaled's tuition fees and housing!

In the tiny village of Chester, Nova Scotia a diverse group came together to sponsor a refugee family. The Al Khayro family arrived last Spring and the community is in love with these two parents adorable four children and one brand new baby! The group, who named themselves "The Starfish Refugee Project" (see explanation on their FaceBook page) have been working tirelessly to make Nova Scotia home for Hussein, Ghoroub, Rowaida, Zahraa, Mohamad and Ahmed and they are settling in well. But through them and email we met Ghoroub's brother who is still in Syria. Khaled is a highly talented and inventive Medical Engineering student whose university schooling was cut short by the Syrian war.

Khaled is currently working in a Hospital in Syria, helping as much as he can with the crisis. It is time we give back to him! He is eager to come to Nova Scotia, Canada, as a Science Student to further his education in the Medical field. As well, he is hoping to be reunited with his sister Ghoroub and her beautiful family.

Khaled has overcome so much in his life, and still manages to keep a positive outlook on life, and achieve so much despite his environment. He hopes to work in the Biomedical Engineering field one day, creating and iventing technologies that can one day be used to save a life. Let's help him reach that goal!

UPDATE (As of November 2017)

Dear supporters of the Syrian student Khaled. His situation has changed big time and I hope you support us in our decision to send him money while we await his student visa.

Here's the situation. After Khaled received the wonderful news that Dalhousie had accepted him, he applied to renew his passport in anticipation of needing it for his visa. He was informed that young men in Syria were not being given passports because they were needed for the war. He was understandably shocked and very dismayed. His wants to heal people, not shoot them on behalf of a dodgy regime. It turns out that he might be facing 'kill or be killed as a defector". He fled to a friend's place in Lebanon. It was a harrowing trip with other like-minded young men. Travelling by night and hiding by day, facing jail or worse if they were caught.

Since then, his friend has left Lebanon and he has been sleeping on the street. Now there is news that Lebanon is preparing for war. We took the emergency decision to send him $500 from the Go Fund Me $2,000 so that he could find somewhere to sleep hopefully away from Beirut. His visa will not be approved until he can prove he has $30,000 for tuition and living. We have raised $23,000 in pledges but that money can't be touched until he arrives.

Please help us support him in Lebanon while he waits for his visa. If you have any concerns about the money being re-directed due to this emergency, please email [email redacted] and we will reserve your donation for when he arrives as originally planned.

If you have it in your heart to help further while he is in such distress, please do so and pass this on to your friends.

More about Me and the Fundraiser!

My name is Tammy Selman, I am a Student at Dalhousie University in my hometown Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada.

I met Khaled through his sister Ghoroub and through the Starfish Refugee Project! They are eager to be reunited. I have been keeping in contact with Khaled through Facebook, and with Ghoroub over the phone

The funds will be withdrawn into a Bank account in Trust. Once Khaled Hamad arrives in Canada, he will be able to access these funds through this account. If Khaled does is not accepted, all the funds will be transfered to Khaled's sister Ghoroub through this bank account.

If Khaled is accepted, the funds will be spent paying tuition fees at Dalhousie University, and residence housing fees, food plans, as well as on school supplies and books.
