Pilgrimage in Spain

$1,091 of $2,000 goal

"One does not choose to walk the Camino. One is either called by God to walk it, or not."

Well, apparently I've been called, because I've been hoping to walk this pilgrim route in northern Spain for many years. Since the Middle Ages, pilgrims have walked 500 miles from the border between France and Spain and the city of Santiago de Compostela, where tradition says the bones of the Apostle James are interred. The most popular route is called the French Way, which thousands of pilgrims travel each year.

I will be traveling from early April to May 11. Financially, this journey seemed impossible until I learned of very low airfares from Norwegian Air. Costs of food and board are low due to a system of dormitories called albergues run by towns and churches all along the way. Still, I will be gone a significant period of time and each day involves expenses.

As a freelance writer my funds are limited, so I am requesting money for food, board, train and bus passage. Food and board is no more than $50 per day, train and bus fares should run no more than about $300.

Contributions of any amount - no matter how small - are gratefully received!

In return, I can offer you prayers as I complete this pilgrimage. I will also compose a special prayer/affirmation particular to your (confidentially held) wishes. You can follow my blog  to learn more about my preparations and progress along the way.

Well, I leave on my trip in a little more than two weeks already. Time is really closing in! It's a bit of a mad rush to make arrangements and order the last minute items I'll need, and make sure that I think of all the things that need to be taken care of at home while I'm gone.

I'm up to walking 7-8 miles in one go now, which is harder on the dogs than me. A couple of my dogs were attacked by a pit bull last week and so they are out of the walking duty while they recover. The remaining dog, Rudy the terrier, is usually sandwiched between these two. Now he is free to sniff the flowers and leap at lizards, but also to demand lots of rest breaks. Hiking so often has been wonderful in beautiful springtime, as you can see from the pictures.

My goal is to be up to 10 miles in one go by the time I leave, so I'm 75% of the way there! Woo hoo!

I also received my credential in the mail. The various albergues (pilgrim hostels) along the way will stamp it for me, qualifying me for the low pilgrim rate. It's a sort of pilgrim passport, I suppose.

The financial generosity of many continues to amaze and humble me. One donator even gave me two separate donations! I so appreciate the kind emails, messages, and shares/retweets that you all have helped me with. I'm a very lucky person to be the recipient of so much attention! I'm at 32% of my goal amount. This means that 13 days of room and board have been paid for already! Just 27 left to go.

Back at the beginning of this preparation experience I told my doctor about what I was doing. He pronounced it good for me "mentally, physically, and spiritually." The "opening jitters" did make me question this at first, but now that I'm almost there I see the truth of his prescription.

This update is all about percentages - namely, I'm up to 5-6 miles per day, or about 40 percent of the daily mileage I will need to walk on the Camino. My walking companions, the dogs, don't know quite what to make of this, but they are game nevertheless!

Here's a view of downtown Los Angeles from one of these training sessions:

And, thanks to the amazing, generous, kind, lovely, spectacular contributions of a number of donors, I have 17 percent of the cost I need for food and board! Hooray and hallelujah both! Thank you, all for your shares and tweets and messages of support, as well. I am so grateful to have you in my life.

In just a few days it will be March and then the countdown for my departure really begins. If you are so called, you can become part of my trip by contributing here, or by supporting me in prayer. Or both! :-)

We finally received a little rain here in California, so the hills are green for a brief period. Here's my dogs and I on a trail this morning on a training hike. There are lots more to go before I'm remotely ready, though.

Thank you so much for everyone who has donated in this campaign. I'm so grateful for your generosity and support and so humbled that you are helping to provide the funding I need for my food and board. I've received about 16% of the necessary funding, and there's time yet before I need the remainder. I feel as though I've already set foot on the path shown here!

Love and blessings to everyone!
