Thirty-three year-old Kevin Sobalvarro remains hospitalized at Kendall Trauma Center, Miami, after suffering extensive injuries when his motorcycle and a car collided Friday night, December 14. He has undergone multiple surgeries for five fractures of his pelvis, numerous fractures in his right hand and wrist and has required several transfusions due to internal bleeding.

The driver of the car has acknowledged responsibility for the accident, which occurred when the vehicle suddenly swerved into Kevin’s path as the two were headed in the same direction. The impact catapulted Kevin some 15 feet before he landed on his butt. Miraculously, there are no injuries to Kevin’s back, spinal cord or head.

The road ahead is uncertain, with prolonged recovery and rehabilitation. Hospitalization is expected to be at least 4-6 weeks, followed by an indeterminate period at a rehabilitation facility and, later, ongoing physical therapy. Kevin will not be able to stand for at least three months.

Kevin’s nature is to consider how to help others, as indicated in his question to one of the first responders on the scene of the accident: “Is anyone else hurt?” The police officer said that in all his years responding to accidents, he has never heard a victim ask about the welfare of others involved.

Now Kevin finds himself totally dependent on others for his welfare.  The financial impact on him and his family is unimaginable. He has motorcycle insurance,  but no health insurance and he is not eligible for Medicaid. He is a parttime computer analyst without sick leave or other benefits who has supplemented his income as an independent computer consultant. He will be unable to support himself for the foreseeable future.

His current on-site support are his mother, Ana, who flew the day after the mishap from San Francisco; his father, David, and his family, who live in Miami; his stepfather Richard's sister, Kathy Olive, a physical therapist, and a wide circle of friends.

Hopefully, this gofundme campaign will help Kevin and his family substantially defray the financial challenges ahead.  Any amount you can donate would be greatly appreciated. Please share this link with your friends or anyone you think would be willing to help.

ONE GIANT LEAP FOR KEVIN!!

Thirteen weeks after his accident Kevin was cleared on Monday, March 18, for weight-bearing on his hips. He returned home and immediately began navigating the apartment with a walker, then went to physical therapy for his first unaided steps. Ana, his mom, said the occasion was "a day so full of joy, wanting to jump and, at the same time, cry." Kevin is forever commenting about the support from so many, which has been instrumental emotionally and financially to his ongoing successful recovery. Thank you and thank you, from Kevin and his family and, he adds, "Love, Love, Love."

In deep gratitude for his good fortune and support from hundreds, Kevin is completing his second week of outpatient physical therapy following the accident December 14. He was discharged from the hospital February 8 and is back in his apartment, which his "team" outfitted with a hospital bed and a ramp to accommodate his wheelchair.
A van will be picking him up five days a week for therapy on his hand, which sustained numerous fractures, tendon and nerve damage, and for strengthening his legs. He hopes to be be cleared to get on his feet mid-March.
And after eight weeks of on-site help from family and friends, he's proud to be spending more time flying "solo," knowing that help is a phone call away.

After two months at the Kendall Regional Trauma Center in Miami, Kevin is going home on Friday (February 8)!
His mom, Ana, and brother, Daniel, have in recent days been preparing his apartment with the amenities (accessible wheelchair, hospital bed on the main floor, screen for privacy, etc.) to make it as accessible and handicapable as possible.
Though restricted from weight-bearing on his hips until mid-March due to five pelvic fractures, Kevin will continue a regimen of physical therapy on his upper body, legs and right hand, which sustained fractures and tendon and nerve damage.
He accepts that he faces months of at-home and outpatient physical therapy, but he is ever grateful for surviving a car striking his motorcycle.
And he has been awestruck by the steady stream of cards, letters, prayers and contributions. He found to be particularly poignant letters of prayerful support from condemned inmates at San Quentin, who responded to calls for prayer from Kevin's stepfather, Richard, who is involved in a Death Row Ministry.

Going on his sixth week at Kendall Regional Trauma Center in Miami after a car turned into his motorcycle, Kevin is finding joy in the simplest luxuries—like being wheeled into a stall January 15 for his first shower since December 14. Despite intense pain, he has begun limited physical therapy, like the first movement of fingers in his right hand which, along with his wrist, sustained numerous fractures.

Recovery will take many months. For example, there will be no weight-bearing on his hips for at least another two months after his multiple surgeries to address five pelvic fractures. After that, there will be months of inpatient and outpatient physical therapy.

Kevin does not have health insurance and it is impossible to predict future costs. Also unknown is when he can go home, much less return to work. Until he is on his feet, he will need constant care.

Your most welcome prayers and support have been huge morale boosts, touching Kevin profoundly. And please consider contributing to the gofundme campaign on his behalf and sharing the following link with your social network. Whatever you can do will be a blessing.
