Kerala, also known as the Gods own country, is in the midst of an unprecedented natural calamity caused by torrential monsoon rains. It has been hit by the worst flooding seen in over a 100 years with at least 324 people killed.

Rescuers are battling persistent heavy downpours to save people, with more than 200,000 people left homeless and housed in camps. Hundreds of homes have been completely destroyed and thousands of homes have been damaged or rendered unsafe to use.

Vast swathes of land are underwater snarling up roads and leaving railways across the state impassable. Kochi international airport is submerged. Further downpours are forecast for the weekend. Kerala has 41 rivers flowing into the Arabian Sea, and 80 of its dams are now said to be open after being overwhelmed. Most of the water treatment plants are submerged with motors being damaged.

Current focus is on rescue and relief with thousands of volunteers and NGO’s on the ground supplementing the efforts of the state and national governments.

The rescue operations are currently complete . Over 322 people lost their lives in this calamity and nearly 1.4 million people have been shifted to relief camps all over the state.

They will need help with rebuilding their lives . Current rough estimates place the damages between 20-30000 crores INR (2.1-3 billion pounds GBP). A lot of work is being undertaken by Central and State governments and NGO's on the ground to rebuild infrastructure and rehabilitate the victims  .

This will take time , effort and money .

There are ways to contribute directly to the Chief Minsters Distress Relief Fund ( also seen in the video):

Or through your chosen NGO

I will endeavor to pass on the contributions from this campaign  to the agency working on the ground who can provide maximum support to the hapless victims without them having to go through the bureaucratic red tape.
