Keep my Neighbor Family Housed!
It takes a village.
Can you imagine being a mother with three children, and not knowing whether you will have a home to live next week? Can you imagine this happening 5 days before Christmas? It's just wrong.
A family in my neighborhood is in that situation — and I'm unwilling to watch it happen! Five days before Christmas. It's just wrong.
Rebecca is a brave, hard-working woman. Her three boys depend on her for home and safety. And because of that, she doesn't give up. She also has an older daughter who is expecting a child. The family has suffered domestic violence and life in a shelter. In recent months, they've begun to live a "normal" life again. As normal as life can be for a family on the edge of poverty.
But finances are really tight. Rebecca works full time — but more 2/3 of her monthly income goes to rent, leleaving only a few hundred dollars for the rest of life. Even a small unexpected expense will throw that out of balance. It's a miracle and a testament to her resourcefulness that they manage to survive. But recently some unexpected medical expenses caused her to fall behind on rent. She's been trying to catch it up, but....
...her landlord has lost patience.
They took her to eviction court.
She has until Wednesday December 19th to pay in full, or face eviction.
I've spent hours talking and brainstorming with Rebecca. She is:
DOING EVERYTHING she knows how.
And she's been so receptive to ideas, advice, and support, and wonderful warm and grateful.
I've spent hours chatting with her, researching online, and calling social service agencies and nonprofits. So far, we've been unable to secure anything that will fill the gap.
This family needs a little bit of help get overcome the current obstacle. I'm committed to making that happen for them. My own life has felt pretty blessed lately, and I have both time and financial resources to help. But can't do it alone.
To stop the eviction, Rebecca is short the funds needed THIS WEEK to avoid eviction— This campaign ends to close that gap plus the $1250 due for January's rent, because once a eviction proceedings are initiated, there is little or no tolerance for late payments! My goal is to have that for her this week so that she can relax a little, enjoy Christmas for her boys, and begin the new year clean slate.
I have faith she can handle things going forward.
Help me create a Christmas miracle for a family who has struggled enough for one year.
**** I will personally match the first $500 contributed to this campaign! ***
Would anyone else like to pledge a larger matching donation to help push this forward?

There's one more step:
with the remaining funds (including a large one which came in this morning), and every last dollar of her upcoming Friday paycheck, will also turn in her full rent for January.
Donations are still being accepted, and every dollar helps. Maybe you have a friend who would also like to be part of their deed.
May your lives be blessed.
It has been inspiring to watch it grow. And I've come to realize this project isn't really about the money. I mean, it is, and the money is something tangible that will solve a very real, immediate need.
But really, this is about hope and light. It's about allowing a human being who feels desperate to know that others stand behind her, that she's not alone in the world. And from that great strength can be born!
There are $250 left to raise. Can you ask a friend to contribute a small amount?
As soon as the campaign is funded — I can hardly wait! — I will sit down with Rebecca and tell her about this. At that time, I will also write a check to her landlord for the full amount raised. And together we will hand deliver our check and hers next week.
Then she can go enjoy a little Christmas rest, and light, and joy with her children.
I have been blown away by how quickly this original campaign was funded. In less than 24 hours, the original goal was reached. THANK YOU.
With so much momentum, I think we can do more!
The original goal solved the most pressing need: along with every dollar Rebecca has and will earn between now and January 4th, things would have been JUST BARELY covered.
But it's time to dream bigger!
I'd like to be able to sit down with her this weekend and say:
– You won't be evicted this week
– you won't have to struggle with loan sharks
– you're covered for January
– you won't end up back in court next month
– AND you can use next week's paycheck to give your boys a Christmas... at home. :-)
– and you can use the next one to bring other bills/utilities current.
– January is a new year, with a new clean slate.
Can you help by continuing to spread the word? All those $20 and $50 donations added up so fast today. If 32 more people hear about this and contribute $20, the new goal will be met.
I believe that can be achieved in another 24 hours!
