The historic Mercer Cottage was once a waterfront getaway for the legendary Mercer family, famous among many reasons for their landmark downtown Savannah home, The Mercer House. Built by the uncle of beloved songwriter Johnny Mercer  in 1917, the Cottage is nestled into a bend in Moon River on beautiful Burnside Island. It is rumored that Johnny Mercer wrote the classic song Moon River from this rural haven.

The Mercer Cottage was acquired by the State of Georgia as part of the purchase of Ossabaw Island in 1978. Sadly, the Cottage has fallen into disrepair and has taken severe damage from a falling tree.

After much struggle, it has been determined that the best course of action is to demolish and clear the dangerous structure from the state-owned property. However, the historic Mercer Cottage doesn't have to suffer the fate of many buildings lost to the constant battle against time and the elements. It doesn't have to end up in a landfill.

Re:Purpose Savannah, a campaign by 501c3 non-profit Emergent Structures, has stepped in to reclaim the precious elements and materials that make up the cottage. Historic wavy-glass windows, charming diamond-pane French doors, and a pair of claw-foot tubs are among the treasures that Re:Purpose Savannah will save from the wrecking ball. But the salvage of the structure doesn't have to stop there. With help from donors, Re:Purpose Savannah can reclaim all of the historic materials, including heart-pine framing beams, tongue-and-groove flooring, and bricks from the chimneys. These materials can find a new life in other homes and businesses in the Savannah community. The materials can also find new life in the hands of the talented artists and craftsfolk in our area.

Flowing elements and materials from historic structures back into the use-stream is core to the mission of Emergent Structures. You can read more about the Re:Puropose Savannah campaign here.

Your help is needed! The effort to salvage the Mercer Cottage will cost the non-profit an estimated investment of up to $16,000. Thankfully, the Historic Savannah Foundation  has offered a Challenge Grant to get the ball rolling! To receive this grant, we need to raise funds to match their offer. With their help and yours, materials from the Mercer Cottage can continue to enrich our historic community for many more years in homes, hands, and hearts.

Every little bit helps, and time is of the essence! We have a very short window to rescue as much as we can. The more we raise, the more we can save! Thank you for contributing!

We have some sad news to share today. Last night, our truck was broken into and our job site power tools were all stolen. Without those tools, we are dead in the water! Fundraising for the Mercer Cottage project is now more critical than ever - each day that goes by without action on the site means that more of the Cottage will be left to the landfill. Please consider donating and/or sharing this campaign with your network to get us back up and running! Thank you for your support! #savemercercottage #repurposesavannah
