HELP US KEEP LIFELINES ALIVE!

I AM YOU is a non-profit working in Ritsona Refugee Camp in Greece. Our mission is to provide humanity in displacement, to preserve dignity and protect the individual rights of the most vulnerable men, women and children.

We aim to resolve real time needs in the field, and one of the most important ways we do this is through our Lifelines program. We provide non-emergency medical transportation and translation services to camp residents, ensuring that they have access to the most vital service - healthcare.
The Lifelines team is made up of drivers, cultural mediators and translators. Together, they transport patients to medical appointments and guide them through the often confusing bureaucracy of the Greek healthcare system. Ritsona camp is a 2 hour walk from the nearest hospital, with no public transport links. It's hard enough getting to an appointment when you're sick - add a language barrier and an unfamiliar way of doing things and a difficult situation becomes nearly impossible. By removing those obstacles, we can try to ensure camp residents get the care they need and deserve.

Unfortunately, all this costs money, and as the refugee crisis vanishes from the headlines, it is becoming harder and harder for us to raise the funds we need. Right now, the Lifelines program is in danger, and we need your help to keep it going!

It costs us just over €2500 a month ($3000) to run a one-car team, rising to around €4300 ($5300) with a second car. That money is spent on car rental, petrol, supplies and occasionally medicine, as well as on drivers and cultural mediators. At the moment, it's money that we simply don't have.

Our aim here is to raise enough money to keep Lifelines going for a month. At the least, it will be a month more of providing an invaluable service to those that need it most. At the most, it will buy us the time we need to find a long-term way of keeping the program alive.

Thank you so much to all who have donated! Lifelines is now up and running again, and it's all thanks to you!

Unfortunately, Ritsona now has a much more serious problem. The camp is currently without a full time doctor, and is relying on sporadic visits from a doctor working in the local hospital. There are almost 900 residents in camp, and access to medical care only a few days a month comes nowhere near to meeting their needs. This also makes it very difficult for our Lifelines program to operate, and for hospital appointments to be scheduled and followed up. Overall, it's a very dangerous situation, and we are anxiously awaiting a resolution from the onsite medical actor.

We'll keep you posted, and thank you again for your continuing support of the community!

Thanks a million to I AM YOU volunteer Charlotta who raised $580 for Lifelines through a fundraising dinner in Finland! Guests gathered to hear three Syrian refugees tell their stories, and money was raised through the sale of soup and wine!

Thank you so much for all your donations so far! We still need to raise more in order to get the program running again though, and who better to explain why it's important than our fantastic program coordinator, Mary!

Unfortunately, we haven't yet raised enough to keep Lifelines going, so from Monday the service will stop running. This is a massive blow to the community, as well as to those working on the program, but we are in discussions with other actors in the camp to see if there is anything that can be done to ease the effects. Meanwhile we are continuing to fundraise and hope to get Lifelines going again as soon as possible.
