A Protest Dance-Film Rising Against Injustice:

The Semillas Collective , Dance To The People and The KYR Mayday Space Children's Theater , are working together to produce a dance-film inspired by the migrant struggle, highlighting the resilience of migrant communities and displaced refugees while expressing solidarity to the families and children detained at the border. This is precisely the time to unite and create with our community. We believe that art and dance are powerful ways of healing and resisting impunity.

Calling out White Supremacy + Alt-Right Leaning Corporations:

The film will also aim to shed the truth about the alt-right leaning corporations that are most invested in supporting ICE, the prison industrial complex &  anti-immigrant policy. As immigrants and children of immigrants, we will be expressing our solidarity with the thousands of children & families being detained at the border via dance-film, a medium that is capable of reaching millions.

Dancing to Decolonize + Heal:

Since early November we have been hosting free theater and dance workshops for children of immigrant families at the Mayday Space in Bushwick, Brooklyn.  Beyond preparing the children for the film-shoot, the dance instructors and facilitators used theater exercises, history and storytelling via choreography to inspire and empower children through dance.  The theme of each dance workshop has emphasized the cultural richness and power of our students and their ancestors, while also addressing how to overcome fear when facing obstacles, such as racism, xenophobia, forced migration, family separation, incarceration, deportation and other issues that impact families of marginalized immigrant communities everyday in this increasingly problematic political environment.

Dancing to Reclaim:

We’ve helped our child-participants find strength in connecting with their indigenous and african roots through dance.  Each week professional dancers and instructors from indigenous danza groups have been volunteering their time and talent in solidarity with this cause. The Sound-Score and Dance that will be featured in the dance-film is inspired by Indigenous Andino Rhythms, Afro beats & Mexica Danza Tradition. Our goal is to shoot on December 16, 2018.

Donate:

The time, energy, love, sweat and tears we continue to pour into this collaboration is not rooted in the expectation of benefiting financially.  We have been working hard for months, out of our own pockets, and are determined to shoot this dance film no matter what. But a dance film of this magnitude is expensive and any financial contribution will make a difference in compensating and helping us with the following costs.  Production Expenses which include: Filming Equipment (cameras, grip truck, sound, lights, stands & stingers, etc.), Travel & Location (gas, transport, location permits, potential location rental, ac, gaffer, grip, electrical support), Food Stipend to cover costs of lunch provided to participants of the Children’s KYR Theater, & Production Insurance.  We also hope to compensate facilitators ( all P.O.C. artists) for their time if,  donations received are sufficient enough to cover the aforementioned costs.

Several of the children participating are part of Ñukanchik Llakta Wawakuna-Movimiento  Cultural which focuses on providing free teaching of the indigenous Andino tradition through music and dance to P.O.C. children in NYC.  We hope to be able to achieve fundraising our goal to help support this amazing group and to the indigenous danza groups who have volunteered their time to help make this project a reality for the children of our community.

Dancing to Create a New World Where Many Worlds May Fit:

Let’s continue to spread “semillas” (seeds) of consciousness, as we rise against injustice together.

Our last dance-film, which focused on Mexico’s human rights crisis and called the end for the supply of weapons from the U.S. to Mexico ( A Stop to Plan Merida)  went as far as being featured on NBC and winning awards at a number of film festivals around the world.

Here is a link to this film press: "They Tried To Bury Us, They Didn't Know We Were Seeds."
