"Keep BFTVT Fishing"

The Bass Fishing Team at Virginia Tech (BFTVT) was started in 2007 and took the bass fishing nation by storm, winning the National Championship in grand fashion. To date, we hold Virginia Tech’s only team National Championship. It’s our claim to fame! We were underdogs then but have since risen to be recognized as a team with unquestionable potential on the water. Since 07’, our club has fluctuated in member numbers and competitiveness in intercollegiate tournaments, but our club has managed to live on and has recently revitalized to peak performance. As of 2014, the team began working closely with the university, acquiring limited funding for a few Spring tournaments. This aid showed immediate success as over 10 teams in the past three years have qualified for births at National Championships, including many top ten finishes and a big win at the Smith Mountain Lake FLW event in 2016. We have 51 members and roughly 17 boaters, making us one of the largest collegiate-bass teams in the nation.

This year, with a sudden change in legislation, the university prohibited our longtime use of the VT symbol on team jerseys and will fund no part of our organization. Our team members are now all self-funded, meaning we front the costs of gas, lodging, licenses, fees, and food to compete in FLW, BASS, and Boat US events held at broad-geographic ranges spanning from Arkansas and Louisiana to New York and Michigan. Fundraising events and online merchandise sales are the only things keeping our teams on the water right now but even so, our team account is running low and participation is dwindling fast. If we can not find an alternative source of funding, the future of the BFTVT is uncertain.

This drop in university support caught us all off guard, yet we choose to stand tall and continue proudly representing our Hokie Nation. It is an honor to be a Hokie Bass member therefore we are determined to maintain this collegiate opportunity so that future Hokies may enjoying the great outdoors and water resources our well managed-freshwater impoundments provide at competitive levels.

Thankfully, with astounding support from the incredibly large and devoted Hokie Alumni and fan base, our team has a fighting chance. We are an IRS registered 501 (c)(3) tax-exempt non-profit which means your generous donations can be deducted from your annual taxes. Donations big or small are welcomed as we push towards our goal of raising 25,000 dollars to support this year’s costs of competition. All donors will receive promotional recognition within our enormous following through the BFTVT Facebook Page and Website. Donations over $500 dollars will receive a free BFTVT Hat, Shirt, and Sticker in recognition of your unwavering support. Thank you for supporting us and Go Hokies!
