Equipment Campaign

$13,500 goal

The Kansas City Boat Club is organized for the purposes of providing education and training in the sport of rowing as well as opportunities for participation in the sport for competition and personal development.

KCBC provides rowing opportunities for high school students through its Juniors program.   KCBC's Juniors program is open to students from the metropolitan area who want to learn how to row and have the opportunity to compete against other high school teams from around the region.  Rowing is not only a great way for them to participate in the ultimate team sport, but it can also enhance opportunities for college admission and scholarships.

The KCBC Juniors program is fairly new, but has had tremendous success in its first two years and has gotten better with every race.  Three members of the first graduating class are rowing in college.  KCBC wants to build on its success and reach even more high school students from around the area.

In order to expand, KCBC will need funding.  The cost to start a rowing program can be significant.  In addition to installing a dock and other infrastructure, KCBC purchased six rowing shells and some oars in its first year.  New rowing shells of the type that KCBC purchased can cost anywhere from $8,000 to $60,000.  Used shells are less expensive but hard to find.  KCBC opted for three new shells at the lower end of the cost spectrum and three used boats.

The fees for Juniors are intended to be affordable so that no one is excluded.  The fees cover the cost of coaching and some of the equipment, but not all of it.  KCBC has had some generous donations from friends of the program and needs additional funding to keep up the momentum.

Funds from this campaign will go to an equipment fund estabished by Kansas City Rowing Foundation, a 501(c)(3) organization for the benefit of KCBC.  Here is how KCBC will use the funds it receives from KCRF for this campaign.

1. The purchase of the new boats was financed and KCBC needs funds to make the final payments (balance = $6,000).

2. KCBC has two jon boats for coaching, but only one motor.  KCBC needs a second motor so that a second coaching launch can be on the water with the rowers for safety and instruction (cost = $3,000)

3. The club has 10 sets of "sculling" oars and 20 "seats" between the six boats (there are also 8 "sweep oars").  KCBC needs another 10 sets of sculls so that all six boats can be used for sculling at the same time (cost = $4,500)

Funding for these items is needed by the end of March, which is when the last boat payment is due and when the Juniors go back on the water.  Depending on how many rowers are added over the winter, KCBC may need to  expand its fleet by purchasing a used 8 person shell (estimated cost = $10,000).  The eight will be the subject of a separate fundraising campaign.

More information about KCBC can be found on its website (, Facebook, and Instagram.
