More information about Paws Chicago (PAWS (Pets Are Worth Saving) Chicago): PAWS Chicago is dedicated to building No Kill communities–starting with a No Kill Chicago–where all healthy and treatable pets are saved. Since 1997 when PAWS Chicago was founded, Chicago has seen an 84 percent drop in euthanasia rates across the city. These numbers are encouraging, but PAWS' work is far from done: More than 6,800 animals were killed in Chicago in 2016. The mission of PAWS Chicago is: To build No Kill communities – starting with a No Kill Chicago – that respect and value the life of every cat and dog. To end the overpopulation of homeless animals through solutions, practices and education. To transform animal welfare by setting higher standards in the way animals are treated and developing a sustainable, solutions-based model. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT The foundation of the No Kill Model is engaging people in the cause of homeless animals. By inspiring and mobilizing individuals throughout Chicago, PAWS is able to bring about change. People adopt dogs and cats, spay/neuter their animals, volunteer their time, donate financially and spread awareness. It is the power of community engagement that fuels our lifesaving efforts and our four core programs: prevention, adoptions, volunteering and animal health and behavior. PREVENTION Prevention is the first critical path to manage an overwhelming oversupply of animals, and this was PAWS Chicago's first major initiative, opening the Lurie Spay/Neuter Clinic in 2000. With the PAWS Chicago Lurie Clinic and the GusMobile Spay/Neuter Van, which brings life-saving solutions directly to neighborhoods most in need, PAWS has worked to reduce intake. ADOPTION A robust and visible adoption program is essential to building a No Kill community.
