Kayla Goller is a senior at Converse College, Spartanburg, SC and will graduate with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business and Music in May 2016. After graduation, Kayla has a dream of walking the Appalachian Trail from Maine to Georgia (2,200 miles). She has worked on her physical conditioning the past two years in preparation for her strenuous five to six month trek and as the intensity of her training increases, so does her determination to see it through.
Kayla is doing her part, as well. Even though she is a full-time student living in the dorm and exercises throughout the week to get in shape, she works at Belk +/-30 hours a week. She saves every penny she can and even collects and uses coupons for everything from food to clothing to help pinch every penny. She is determined to make her adventure happen.
Hiking expenses vary, are numerous and adding up quickly. Equipment (hiking boots, camp shoes, backpack, first-aid kit, knives, cooking utensils/mess kits, hiking poles, tent, sleeping bag, GPS watch, insect repellent, water purification supplies, etc.), combined with clothing (winter and summer), food and postal expenses to pre-position those equipment, clothing and food supplies along the trail route (31 trail stations), drive the costs up. In addition, Kayla will incur airfare expenses to go to Maine to begin her adventure. From time-to-time along the trail, there are small communities and towns with restaurants and stores where she can stop and enjoy an occasional hot meal and pickup depleted and unforeseen needed supplies.
