Kayden the Fighter

Meet Kayden. Kayden was born with hypotonia on December 1, 2014. Which is a state of low muscle tone (the amount of tension or resistance to stretch in a muscle), often involving reduced muscle strength. Hypotonia is not a specific medical disorder, but a potential manifestation of many different diseases and disorders that affect motor nerve control by the brain or muscle strength. After submitting tissue for genetic testing in Spring 2017, Kayden was diagnosed with Merison-deficient congenital muscular deficiency, or, Congenital Muscular Dystrophy (LAMA2-CMD). This means, he is not able to grow more muscle than what he has currently, even though his body will continue to grow.  Here is a detailed explanation of Kayden's Diagnosis, as explained by his parents, Ryan and Amberly Leland.

So what is this fundraiser for?

Kayden is at an age that in order to gain any kind of independence, he must get an electric chair.  Additionally, a chair would allow him to conserve his muscle usage, and give his parents relief. Currently, he is borrowing one that has been graciously donated by MDA; however, the battery on this chair is at the end of its life, and unlike cars, once the battery dies, the chair is done. The Lelands submitted a request to their insurance and were able to get half of the cost of the power-chair, but even still, the Lelands need to purchase a custom-made van to load this special chair.

The costs we are looking to subsidize are the cost of their responsibility for the power chair (~$10,000) and the cost of a custom-van (used, ~$30,000-$45,000). As you can imagine, this is a huge financial burden on top of what is already a physically- and mentally-challenging situation.

Kayden is a very sweet and smart boy who deserves the opportunity to move around on his own and live his life to the fullest. Please help us spread the word!

Ryan and Amberly have done an amazing job of documenting and updating Kayden's story as it unfolds. Please follow their Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/Kaydenthefighter/ in order to receive the most current updates!
