UPDATE: I have now started dialysis and I am incurring more expences that before. I have medications that are not covered under my insurance. While I am working with the insurance company to get some approved I will have to pay for them until then. One medication is almost $1300 a month. Now that I am on dialysis I am going to try for disability again but that can take a while to be approved also. I have already had to spend 5 days in the hospital.
Sixteen years ago I was diagnosed with Lupus Nephritis. For anyone that is unfamiliar, {Lupus nephritis is inflammation of the kidney that is caused by systemic lupus erythematous (SLE). Also called lupus, SLE is an autoimmune disease. With lupus, the body's immune system targets its own body tissues. Lupus nephritis happens when lupus involves the kidneys.}
I have been losing kidney function slowly over the last 16 years. I am now to the point that I must get a kidney transplant to survive. While I have insurance it will not cover all my medical expenses some of which are quite expensive. I will have to travel from my home to Chapel Hill Hospitals for testing and that will also be where I will have surgery. I will have to stay in Chapel Hill for 7-14 days even after I am released from the hospital. With a 4-6 week recovery once I am able to travel back home. I will require 24 hour care during this time. So my husband will need to take time off work. My mom will also be helping out.
While insurance will pay most of my medical bills not all of the testing and aftercare will be covered. I have already gone through my 1st round of testing and medical bills are starting to pile up. Insurance will not cover any of my travel or hotel when I have to make trips to Chapel Hill. Once a donor has been found and I enter recovery, my husband will need to take time off work to be with me. He is our only source of income.
I need to get these mounting medical bills paid off and money set aside to cover future expenses during this whole process.
