Help Katie move to Montana!

The search is over -- I've been hired to cover high school sports at the Daily Inter Lake in beautiful Kalispell, Montana, 32 miles from Glacier National Park! But I need your help to get there.

This is a huge move, obviously, and there are worse problems to have. But a cross-country move is expensive and what savings I had are depleted from months-long unemployment and unreliable income in the interim. So that's why I'm asking for help with all of this.

Since I'll need my car there, I have to make the 2,000+ mile drive and my dad has generously offered to road trip with me and help me get settled in Kalispell. In addition to gas and tolls, that's food and a couple hotel nights for two people, plus a plane ticket for my dad to get back home to Pittsburgh. I don't want my parents to have to spend any of their own money (though they'll probably insist) and I don't have savings to fall back on.

Why Montana, you ask? It's really far away, you say. This was not a decision made lightly. There was a lot of soul-searching involved and I decided there was no better time than now to really branch out on my own and start something new in a wild place. It will be the farthest from my family I've ever been and I'll have to leave the best dog ever, Gus, behind for a few months as it's difficult enough to find housing in Kalispell without a pet.

My dad told me this the other day: there's probably not going to be a better time in my life to do this than now. So here we are. Things came together for the job really quickly and I'm very close to having a place to live (Update: I have a place to live!). When I applied for a job in Montana, I didn't think I'd get it. It was a daydream. After I was offered the job, I spoke to several current and former employees of the Inter Lake to make sure this would be a good fit for me. Everything just lined up.

I have to start work August 14, so my dad and I will start the drive on the 10th. We'll make a quick stop at Mt. Rushmore on the second day of the trip, before docking for the night in Gillette, Wyoming.  If there's anything not too far off the highway as we drive through Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Minnesota, Wisconsin, North Dakota or Montana (see road trip map) that we absolutely should see, let me know!

In between packing and trip planning, I'm going to create a blog so all of you can follow along on the road trip and once I get to Montana. And of course (probably after the winter because Montana winters are loooong), I'll be able to entertain visitors. Countless people have helped me along the way over the past few months and it feels tacky to ask for more but I don't know how else I'm going to make this thing work. Any help would be endlessly appreciated. I'll put up a picture of the route we plan to drive, so if you have suggestions of cool things we should stop off and see, please let me know!
