Kate NEEDS a Seizure Alert Dog!

Donation protected
Kate is a vibrant 15 year old girl who loves music more than life itself and lives with Epilepsy, a condition of the brain causing seizures.

Kate has “refractory,” or “drug resistant" uncontrolled seizures.  Motor symptoms may include sustained rhythmical jerking movements (clonic), muscles becoming weak or limp (atonic), muscles becoming tense or rigid (tonic), brief muscle twitching (myoclonus), or epileptic spasms (body flexes and extends repeatedly).

Kate is at a higher risk for SUDEP “Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy,”  In addition there are a general list of other various co-conditions that  may include:

"Not doing well" at home, school, work, or with friends.
Cognitive or learning problems that require special help or accommodations
Symptoms of depression, anxiety, or other changes in mood or behavior
Problems sleeping
Unexplained injuries, falls, or other illnesses
Thinning of the bones or osteoporosis
Reproductive problems
Risk of death

We are raising money to be able to get her a service dog called a "seizure alert dog."

* A seizure dog is a dog that has been trained (or has learned) to respond to a seizure in someone who has epilepsy.

* Dogs can be trained as service animals for people with seizures. The law protects people’s right to use service animals in public places.

* Service dogs can be trained to do a variety of tasks, including barking to alert caregivers when a seizure occurs, moving in a way to protect the person having a seizure, or activating an alarm.

These dogs are very expensive because of the great deal of specialized training. There is also a long waiting list. The sooner we can put down the money for a dog, the sooner we can add her to the training wait list.

We need to raise $20,000 for the dog (the fee the training egency charges)

Kate's doctor has urged us to get her a dog, as in the last 3 years since she has developed epilepsy she has continued to progressively get worse as each month goes by.  This health situation is urgent!

We are asking you to please share this with your network of people and implore you to help with the future safety of our daughter.
