Kate's Nursing School Funds

My name is Kaitlyn, I'm 21 years old and I attend Adelphi University in Garden City, NY. I am creating a Go Fund Me account to hopefully raise funds to help with the stress of struggling to pay for books for college. My story in Nursing started 6 years ago when my father was diagnosed with stage 4 lung cancer which metastasized to his brain and bones. He was given only 2 months prognosis of living and since he was such a fighter, he lived for 7 months. Unfortunately, he passed away July 28th 2013. The loss of my father not only affected me tremendously, but my two sisters and mother as well. My mom has been trying her hardest to support three kids all by herself, but it has been extremely difficult. After my father died, I was a junior in high school and his illness made me realize my purpose in life was to become a nurse one day to help ease the pain of families that are dealing with a similar scenario in which I went through. I attended Queensborough Community College after I graduated high school in 2015 for two years. I am now only three semesters away from graduating with my Bachelors in Nursing but the struggle to pay for tuition and books has added a significant amount of stress on my shoulders. I work as much as I can during my time off from school (i.e. summer and winter break) but unfortunately the money I save from working still is not enough to pay for all my books. It is difficult (nearly impossible) to work while in nursing school considering the crazy amount of time spent going to clinicals, class, and studying; It is a very demanding major. My tuition is $40,000 a year and I spend about $3,000 on books per year. I receive a $16,000 scholarship each year due to my GPA, which currently stands at a 3.9. Unfortunately, I only get about $2,000 a year in financial aid even though I only rely on one parent. To pay for the remaining amount of tuition I take out the maximum amount of loans possible. I have also volunteered my summer break in high school at North-well Manhasset & received the Debbie Tascone Nursing Scholarship through the hospital. I am hoping whoever views this page will have even just $5 to donate towards my cause. I am so passionate about becoming a nurse one day, it makes me sick to think about struggling to afford attending anymore when I am so close to reaching my goal. Please help me to help save and change lives one day when I become the registered nurse I’ve always wanted to be.
