Karen’s going to Mexico!!!

As many of you know, I'm a DACA student and I'm proud to be one. If you didn't know, it’s probably because I just started feeling comfortable telling people.

When I was four years old, my parents left everything they knew in Mexico City, Mexico to make sure I had opportunity. Growing up I didn’t understand what this meant until I realized that going to college would be extremely hard. Thankfully, Former President Obama’s DACA (Direct Action for Childhood Arrivals) allowed me to have a social security, driver’s license and the possibility of college. This all happened around my Sophomore year in high school.

During my senior year, one of my teachers watched out for me and encouraged me to apply for theDream.us. This was the first full ride scholarship for DACA students and I became a part of the first class. My only partner school was Miami Dade College, so that’s where I went. Miami Dade College helped me embrace myself and diversity. Now, I’m at the University of Central Florida studying Political Science with a track on International relations. I feel privileged to have come this far and have had these opportunities.

Something has been missing and I have felt a longing to connect to my roots for the first time. Now I have an opportunity through the US-Mexico foundation to travel to Mexico to reconnect with my roots while learning and expanding my knowledge.

Overview

The U.S.- Mexico Foundation’s Dreamers without Borders (DWB) program is the most prestigious binational educational and service program specially designed for young DACA dreamers of Mexican origin and Mexican Americans. DWB provides with the opportunity to attain a greater understanding of the importance of the binational relationship, while strengths the participants‘ pride in their heritage. The program’s agenda is truly unique and has proven to be a life-changing experience.

FROM THE US-MEXICO FOUNDATION :

The purpose of Dreamers Without Borders program is to contribute to your professional development by providing you with the unique opportunity to attend gatherings and seminars with business executives, civic and social leaders, government officials, and Mexican students. Through your participation in the program you will learn first-hand about Mexico’s current economic, political and social conditions. Additionally, you will be asked to become active member of the USMF’s Binational Young Leaders Network, through which you will participate, during one year, in an online service-learning project as an English mentor of a low-income Mexican college student. Similarly, you will also be asked to participate in the delegation’s research project upon your return to the US, which will be published in collaboration with the University of California.

Your scholarship as a participant to the Dreamers Without Borders Program will cover the expenses of your stay in Mexico, including seminars, hotel, meals, cultural visits, and local transportation for all activities included in the program’s agenda. You are required to cover all expenses associated with roundtrip flights, local transportation to arrive to the venue’s hotel to and from the airport, advance parole application fees (when applicable in the case of DACA Dreamers), and all personal expenses.

I predict my expenses should come out to :
$575.00 for advance parole + $260-400 for round trip ticket +extras
