Kaleyard - Cook | Eat | Share

KALEYARD is a cook school with a difference. The word 'Kaleyard' means a kitchen garden in old Scots, and we hope to bring the love to homecooking into to people's life, heart and homes - building togetherness and easing social isolation through the power of food.

We are set up to be a social enterprise and our profits will go back into our community classes and events.

We will offer free and subsidised cookery classes in Glasgow with an aim to help inspire adults and children with the skills to cook affordable food from scratch, while bridging barriers, helping people out of social isolation, creating a sustainable business,  Accessibility is key and therefore we hope to create a safe, unintimidating space for people to learn, cook, eat and share together.

Our commercial classes will fund our social impact and community classes. We have recently received funding from First Port, a social enterprise awarding organisation, to help us with our initial start up costs, but we need your funds now to be able to create free and subsidised classes which we can offer charities, schools, other social enterprise groups and the community generally. We need funds to market our classes, and most of all, create awareness about our project.

We are initially going to be a pop up cook school within the kitchens of an amazing social enterprise grocery store in Glasgow's Southside called Locavore, but intend to pop up in different locations in Glasgow. Our long time plan is to  acquire our own space in the next 24 months, after we have created an awareness and demand for our classes.

We will be working with other cookery teachers from across the UK who will bring their expertise to some of our classes. There is nothing like this in Glasgow yet, and we believe the time is ripe for change - its never too late to let food change the way we communicate, shatter barriers and create simple, cost-effective and healthy meals for ourselves and our families.

Kaleyard is founded by Sumayya Usmani, an experienced cookery teacher and award-winning cookbook writer who is passionate about helping people fall in love with cooking.

Our community classes will include:

* Teaching school children about food - colours, textures and smells
* Classes for making new friends for over 55s and helping with social isolation
* Seasonal homecoming for families with low budgets
* Cancer preventive classes as well as classes for cancer patients who are looking to enliven their palate with flavour
* Classes for and lead by women from ethnic minorities and refugees
And much more

Your support will mean the world to us, and help us make Kaleyard's missing of helping Glasgow, cook, eat and share - together, a reality. Please DONATE as much as you are able, every penny will be greatly appreciated
