There’s no easy way to put this. Our 5 year old niece, Kalea Christine Ramos was diagnosed with Mixed Phenotype Leukemia on October 22nd, 2017 at Rady’s Children’s Hospital in San Diego.

Kalea is smart, sensitive, silly and a fantastic baby sister. She jokes. She has fun. She has charm. Her sweet voice will melt the stern and lift any mood. She is a beautiful little girl.

Kalea’s Leukemia is not just any Leukemia. Representing just 5% of all acute Leukemia cases this type of Leukemia is extremely rare. There is no standard national protocol for treatment of Mixed Phenotype Acute Leukemia (MPAL), which makes treatment difficult and more complex. Treatment that will include a bone marrow transplant. Treatment that is likely to extend beyond two years. She’s endured a lot over the past few days and on Monday, October 23, 2017, Kalea began her first round/block of chemo, which will continue for 29 days .

In her mom’s words: “As a parent, you remember the moment the RN in the delivery room put bands on your wrist signifying and tangibly identifying that brand-new angel as yours. For those who know the feeling, that euphoria is the exact opposite of the terror you feel being banded with your child after a late night Leukemia diagnosis”.

Since the diagnosis, our family’s lives have been shaken. While we struggle to understand how a young, vibrant little girl could be forced to have to fight for her life at such a young age, we continue to remain strong and vow to fight with her. As a family we believe strongly in the power of positivity and prayer and are eternally grateful for the outpouring of support that Kalea, Mike, Angie and family are receiving.  Thank you to all those who have shown their love and support and continue to pray for Kalea.

Kalea’s Mom and Dad are living anyone's worst fear – A child with cancer. As the family faces significant medical expenses, therapy treatments that may not be covered by insurance, costs of child care for their two other children Kailen (11) and Keanna (7) and loss of income during Kalea’s hospitalization, together we can help relieve their financial stress and aid in Kalea’s recovery.  Please donate if you can to help the Ramos family during this very stressful time. And please share their story, every little bit helps, as do your words of strength and prayers.

Let's continue to fight for Kalea.
