Kal's Battle Against Lyme Disease
Kal is battling chronic Lyme disease.
Just over a year ago, Kal was a healthy young man, full of vigor and ambition. He had just been hired as the Chief Tax Appraiser in a nearby county and was in the prime of his life.
Then one day he came down with what he thought was the flu, but instead of gradually getting better, he started to become easily fatigued, his joints started hurting and insomnia set in and his sleep pattern completely changed, disrupting his day to day routine.
This continued for months, gradually getting worse despite treatment from local doctors. In that short period of time due to his medical issues, Kal was unable to function at his work, lost his job, and had to move back in with his parents.
Besides the drastic weight loss he's experienced, Kal endures rashes, neurological Issues, joint pain, swollen lymph nodes and fatigue, on a daily basis.
Before he was properly diagnosed with Lyme, Kal saw several doctors and specialists who diagnosed him with other common ailments, but his conditioned only worsened.
Finally, after the 2nd or 3rd attempt a specialist was able to identify the cause (Lyme) but by then the disease had established a foothold and severely weakened Kals immune system and it now has gotten to a stage where the symptoms are overwhelming and is disabling .
He and his parents are now in Tampa Florida for the next 12 to 16 weeks where Kal will be undergoing daily treatments for 5 hours each day. The out of pocket cost for the treatments alone run $5,000.00 per week, and Lyme is one of the rare diseases not covered by health insurance.
Additionally the family is paying for lodging, food, and other incidental living expenses. As anyone knows who has been through this, those expenses can easily add an additonal $1,200-$1,500 per week.
If you're wondering why Kal's parents chose to come with Kal for the treatments, the answer lies in how Lyme disease affects the brain.
The symptoms of cronic Lyme disease are similar to those with Parkinson’s disease, ALS, depression and Alzheimer’s disease. With these conditions, Kal needs a support system and thankfully his parents are able to be there during this time.
Any donation, no matter how small can make a positive impact on Kal and his family as they battle this insidious disease.
Please remeber this family in your prayers and lets help them through this crisis.
We wanted once again say how much we appreciate your prayers, love and support. Words can't express what we feel in our hearts. Sorry it has been so long since our last update but it has been so up and down we weren't sure what to say.
Kal is in his 8th week of treatment and still receiving daily infusions and on multiple supplements and prescription medications. Thank the good Lord he is able to eat again. We are so thankful for the improvement that we see but know there is a long road ahead before he is where he needs to be. We are asking that you please continue to keep him in your prayers. We love and miss you all. God Bless!
These past two weeks have been very busy to say the least. Many, many test have been performed. He also had a PET Scan of his brain performed on Thursday due to the fact that is has gone neurological. We also had a couple of very frightening episodes with his heart. We were sent to St Joseph's ER in Tampa to have everything checked out. His doctor believes he has Lyme Carditis which is causing these episodes. They occur during or right after his infusions so they slowed the rate of his infusions down, giving them to him over a longer period of time which seems to help. He also had his Port inserted Friday. His poor arms look like pin cushions so the Port will give him a much needed break from all of the sticks.
We go into this coming week very hopeful. We are looking forward to each day bringing us that much closer to a cure for Kal. We know with God's blessing and the support of so many precious friends and loved ones that is the direction that we are headed in.
Again, thank each and every one of you for all that you are doing and we look forward to the day that "We can pay it forward."
With very appreciative hearts and much love from Keith, Kal and Lynn
Please continue your prayers and support for this family.
God Bless you all for the generous donations! 1 week down and 15 to go.
Keeping you all, in my thoughts and prayers for comfort and strength through this most difficult time. Love you!
Prayers continue for eating and comfort.
