Kaity's 4-H Global Citizenship Project

Nǐ hǎo (Chinese), Jambo (Swahili), Hola (Spanish), Kon'nichiwa (Japanese), Hello (English),

My name is Kaity and I have been a Florida 4-H member for 10 years and attended PK Yonge Developmental Research School for 6 years.  My experiences through 4-H and a university-based school like PK Yonge have given me an appreciation for global learning. Now those leadership and interpersonal skills have led me to want to share what I have learned in 4-H and school  and gain new global experiences by representing Florida, National 4-H, and my school, PK Yonge, in two different exchanges. I believe it’s important to be a citizen of the world and learn all you can about others. Plus it’s fun to travel and eat new food.

In the next year, I have the opportunity to participate in two global exchange programs - one through PK Yonge and one through 4-H.  To be part of these programs, I am responsible for raising the money to cover the cost of my trips. The money I raise will help with travel costs as well as to pay for the programs that allows me to share cultural insights about Florida and the United States, while learning about the cultures of China and Costa Rica. The total cost for the two programs is $6,050.

To help raise money for these experiences, I have been saving all of my Christmas, birthday, and fair premium money; doing odd jobs like babysitting, yard and house work; and selling items that I no longer use.  I also participate in fundraising activities like car washes at PK Yonge for the China trip but those funds are split between 20 students. I have several other fundraisers planned.

Global Exchange Program Opportunities

China, November 2019 - PK Yonge International Student Exchange Trip  - Cost $2,050
I will be travelling with my school, PK Yonge, to China for two weeks.  We’ll be staying at another university research school which is a boarding school and they will be covering our lodging costs so the trip is actually very reasonably priced.  We will go to a school for a week and then we will do a homestay with a family for the weekend and then returning to the school for five more days. In class, we will learn about the Chinese culture and history. We will also learn how to speak and write some Chinese also. Over the weekend, we may go shopping with the families. I will get the opportunity to see how their lifestyle is different than ours.

Costa Rica, Summer 2020 - States 4-H International Exchange Program  - Cost $4,000
I plan to participate in the outbound summer program with the States 4-H Exchange and travel to Costa Rica for a month.  This program is a homestay with another 4-H family and you attend their 4-H camp. Fees for this program are due this coming December.  While I am there, I’ll experience their food, do some sight seeing, and really work on our language skills. I’ll have finished two years of high school Spanish by the time I go, so I think this will really help.

Other Global Citizenship Experiences

Kenya, November 2017
My first experience travelling internationally (and on an airplane) was to Kenya with my family for two weeks.  We did a homestay with several different families and went on a safari. I learned a tiny bit of Swahili and can understand a little bit.  My Kenyan grandfather gave me the name Cheibaibai which means happy girl. I also went to the Kenya 4-H Summit while I was there and got to present about entomology to 150 Kenyan 4-H members.  It was interesting to see how 4-H was the same and different halfway across the world. This experience was life changing for me. Seeing how people live in different countries - especially third world countries - was eye opening.  They were also so welcoming and I made a lot of friends. This experience is what made me want to do the global citizenship project. The safari also inspired me to pursue wildlife conservation and photography as a career.

Japan, July 2019 - Host an international 4-H member
I have applied to host a 4-H exchange student this coming summer.  She will be from Japan. When she is here, I hope to show her the way my family lives and maybe teach her a few things.  She is a Japan 4-H member so I hope to hear about their 4-H clubs and programs. I’m excited to show her farm life in Florida and the beach.

China, Fall 2020 - Host a Chinese student
After visiting the Chinese school this fall, I will also get a chance to reciprocate the hospitality.  When the Chinese school visits us in the fall of 2020, I will participate as a host for one of the students for two weeks.

Thailand - Sponsor a young child
In addition to these experiences, I also sponsor a young child in Thailand through Compassion International.  One day, I hope to visit her. Until then, we exchange letters.

International Mission Trip
I’m working with my church youth Sunday school class to organize an international mission trip in the next two years.  This will be different than the 4-H and school projects since we’ll be there to work and provide relief. I’m hoping to use my experiences and leadership skills from these global opportunities to help plan and organize something meaningful.

As a member of 4-H, I also participate in other projects such as livestock, dog, photography, forestry, and leadership.  I’m an officer in my club and county and a district delegate. I also hosted a 4-H photography exhibition and showed my dog this year.  And, I placed as 3rd high intermediate individual in the state forestry contest. For my livestock project this year, I won the pork division of the regional tailgating contest and competed at the state contest.  And, I’m doing the hog & ham project which is a field to fork project where we have to do the growing, harvesting, and processing.

At school, I have been a member of the PK Yonge performing arts program for 5 years where I sing soprano.  I’ve also been playing the viola for 5 years.

I want to go to experience life through an exchange program because I think that it is incredibly important for young people of my generation to understand other cultures and develop a global perspective.  I am excited to have the chance to visit or experience multiple countries before I graduate high school. I plan to study wildlife biology and photography in college and I think this project will help me have an advantage to other students and be more comfortable when travelling.

Your donation will mean so much to me because it will allow me to give back a little to 4-H and PKY by promoting them in a global environment. I will also be able to learn and grow by being self-sufficient in another country. These are skills that will help me become a better leader and better global citizen.

Thank you so much!
