Open Mary's House

Tax deductible
Before there was Elgin, there was a family.  We need your support to restore the homestead of Mary Christian Burleson!

Imagine walking across a threshold and hearing the sound of squeaking floorboards as you walk through the oldest standing home in the community of Elgin, Texas. Built out of necessity, resilience and ingenuity, the Mary Christian Burleson house was built around 1847 after Mary, had lost two husbands to the perils of life in the early days of Texas settlement, one to illness and one to attack.

Our goals with the Mary Christian Burleson House are simple: to provide a community space in the oldest home in our town: to unify our present and future with our past and create an inclusive space for events, exploration and a way to envision our community’s future for all Elgin residents.

When you donate to our campaign, your donation goes toward finishing the renovation of the house so that is usable by all Elgin residents for events, school tours, and more. Currently, we are $18,000 away from finishing critical renovation steps to allow for groups and tours to begin onsite.

Please consider helping us rebuild this Elgin resource: as our community changes, access to the stories of history’s past can help us understand our present and create our future to be welcoming, resilient, and inspired, just like Mary Christian Burleson, herself.
