Pawsitive Vet Team Mexico Mission
We are a team of Veterinary professionals planning an animal "humanitarian" trip to Puerto Penasco, Mexico to help the wonderful volunteers in that area curb the pet overpopulation through a spay and neuter program. Too many unwanted dogs and cats either are left abandoned to reproduce yet more unwanted pets or are abused beyond belief. We ventured to Cancun in February 2014, and Puerto Penasco in November 2016 and were able to make a big difference for two different volunteer rescue organizations there. We even managed to bring home one lovely dog in 2014, and 6 dogs in 2016, now most of them residing here in the Okanagan Valley of BC!
On our trip were 1 veterinarian, 2 animal health technicians and 2support staff. We so much enjoyed helping out last year that we immediately began planning to go again 2.5 years later, which will be March 2019 and so we have begun our fundraising again. To fund our 2014 and 2016 trip, we collected bottles and cans, did lots of toenail trims for donations, and collected medical supplies from our local human hospital and other veterinary clinics along with a good chunk from our own pockets. And we left a sizeable chunk of cash with the volunteers in Cancun and Puerto Penasco along with a bunch of much needed drugs and supplies! :)
Some of you might think that we should be helping animals in "our own back yard" rather than travelling to Mexico and you would be right! The great news is that we do that! We fundraise for the Okanagan Humane Society regularly, donate our time to causes in our area and give deep discounts to those with little money for needed procedures on their pets. But who will help the dogs and cats in Mexico if outsiders don't?
