“The average total costs in the 6 months postindex were $106,896, from $79,099 for patients who received neither temozolomide nor radiation to $138,767 for those who received both therapies.”
Our family has had no past history of cancer in any form and as such our current insurance plan does not cover such an affliction. Justin is currently receiving both temozolomide and radiation.

About Justin / Acerca de Justin
Justin is currently a Senior at Middle College High School in Santa Ana, a rigorous college-preparatory program augmented by credit courses in an education partnership with Santa Ana College. Among his many interests include basketball, live music, anime, and playing the violin. Heavily involved as a performer, he has appeared over the past few years with the Community Youth Orchestra of Southern California (CYOSC), Orange County Children’s Therapeutic Arts Center’s String Quartet (OCCTAC), and the Santa Ana College Chamber Orchestra. Justin’s determination and commitment to music making reflects a lifelong commitment to striving for higher standards and achieving one of his goals to be a world-class violinist.

Initial Hospitilazation/ Hospitalización inicial
Justin experienced a loss of balance and motor function back in early March. After soccer games, he would trip or fall often, and attributed it to physical impacts he received while playing. Unfortunately, this was not the case. On the evening of March 4th, he experienced severe nausea, headaches, vomiting, and also collapsed multiple times. His family took him to Kaiser Permanente Emergency where multiple tests eventually led to a MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) scan. The MRI revealed a mass in his brain that was responsible for fluid and pressure build-up affecting his motor function. Justin experienced paralysis on his entire left side. A transfer to Fountain Valley Regional Hospital and Medical treatment for a VP Shunt was successful in relieving some of the pressure on his brain, and a return of some of his lost motor function. A subsequent biopsy revealed to us a Stage 4 Glioblastoma (brain cancer).

The biopsy took over ten days to reach us, after Justin had been transferred to the Health Bridge rehabilitation center for ongoing mobility treatment. On March 29th, only a few days before his eighteenth birthday, Justin was diagnosed with a Stage 4 Glioblastoma, the most aggressive kind of cancer that begins within the brain. My name is Clemente, and Justin is my little brother. The news was incredibly difficult for my family to process. Millions of questions rushed through my mind. How could such an advanced stage of cancer just occur spontaneously? Why was he affected? What can I do to help? His left side immobility only makes his case that much more difficult for our family to bear. He has played the violin throughout his life not only as a way to challenge him but also as a career path and just like that this has also been taken away from him. Health Bridge along with Kaiser helped transport him to and from Los Angeles in order to meet with Kaiser’s Oncology division. Justin then began to start radiation and chemotherapy while at Health Bridge. To this day everything continues to feel surreal.
Mi nombre es Clemente, y Justin es mi hermano pequeño. Las noticias fueron increíblemente difíciles de procesar para mi familia. Millones de preguntas pasaron por mi mente. ¿Cómo podría una etapa tan avanzada de cáncer ocurrir espontáneamente? ¿Por qué se vio afectado? ¿Que puedo hacer para ayudar? Justin was devastated and cried often. I believe I shared the same sentiment as my family did when I say that we felt so helpless. We stayed overnight accompanying him letting him know that he was not going to go through this fight alone. Various people in our community shared this sentiment. I had parents constantly asking me what they could do in order to help Justin in any way. I have had parents come to our house and give us fruits and vegetables so that we could keep him on a healthy diet through his process. Teachers from various schools came to visit him ranging from elementary school up to his current high school along with various teachers from extracurricular activities. After Health Bridge we had a bit of a scare with the initial radiation and chemotherapy, which landed him in Kaiser’s ICU. Kaiser has since changed some of the medication and continued treatment. He has done so well in fact that Kaiser has allowed him to come back home with us. Kaiser has since lent us a hospital bed, wheel chair, and a hoist to help with transporting him around the house. While he had been hospitalized Justin had the opportunity to be a part of the Make-A-Wish Program. Justin’s first wish was to provide the student string quartet at OCCTAC with complete violin outfits. His second wish was to see the legendary violinist Itzakh Perlman perform live. We were elated to learn that both of his wishes were granted! Justin currently has me tune his instrument daily and the Perlman performance took place this past weekend on May 13th.
