Insulin pump to change diabetics life
Donation protected
I have a long term chronic illness
Type 1 insulin dependant diabetes
I have this for over 15 years
This causes many other health complications and has a dramatic negative impact on my health, my ability to work and so my lifestyle, my finances and my mental well-being
I am on many different drugs and medication and have tried several types of insulin with little or no improvement in my control over the disease which blights my life
In the time I have had the condition I have received little or no support from the NHS and now that we are seeing evermore advances and breakthroughs In treatments for diabetes I am being left to rot by my local primary care trust who do not advocate or fund revolutionary aids such as insulin pumps
The reason the NHS and NICE will not fund insulin pumps is purely cost
They have been shown to improve a patient's control over diabetes, reducing peaks and lows in blood sugars
This massively improves a person's health by dramatically reducing the fatigue, the shakes, the sweating hot and cold, the slurred speeche and disorientation that an attack can bring
Despite the fact I suffer from all to regular hypoglycemia attacks that can range from the shakes to being collapsed on the floor my GP informs me they will not sanction me an insulin pump
This one piece of medical equipment could turn my life around almost overnight
I'm 40 now I've struggled to get by almost half my life
Due to being off work ill all too often I have not the finances to privately purchase a pump
They cost between £2500-£3000 in the UK and about £1000 annual running costs
I am dreaming of reaching a goal of £3000 to be able to give me back some quality of life before it's too late
I'm ashamed at times of the position I find myself in but then this was an inherited incurable disease and I've been let down by our healthcare service
If people could only give £1 each I would be so greatful that one day I can reach my dream goal
