Junky Comics Needs Your Help!

Donation protected
Junky Comics is a little comic book store in West End, Brisbane that was established in April of 2015. Junky specialises in alternative comics, zines and magazines, and stocks and supports local artists and makers. In the (almost) 4 years that we have been open we have put on countless exhibitions, book and zine launches, music shows, workshops, meet ups and book clubs. Our aim has been to showcase work from indie artists all over the world but, most importantly, house the work of local and interstate artists and give them a place to sell their wares and exhibit their work.

As some of you may or may not know, it has been a bit of a tough slog over the last 4 years.

2 years ago we had a fundraiser to keep Junky going and it was amazing. The community rallied around us and money we raised kept Junky going for another 2 years and for that we are so grateful.

Sadly, however, we have come to a point where we have to close our beautiful little nook on 93 Vulture street. Rent is just killing us and we’ve been trying to put it off and off for a year but it became severely obvious that there is just no other option but to close the doors on our home of 4 years.

But among all of this sad news there is a silver lining. We have been very lucky to be offered a space within a new creative collective that’s based in West End and shared with 3 other amazing Brisbane makers and small businesses. Without this wonderful offer, Junky would have had to close its doors once and for all. Something we really don’t want to do. We want to continue doing what we do and providing a space that supports and is a part of Brisbane’s creative community. So, Junky isn’t giving up without a fight, we really want to keep Junky alive and this new space is going to help us do just that. We will be able to put on bigger and better events and collaborate with a wonderful group of creatives. We will be working and operating in an environment where we get to keep being a part of Brisbane’s amazing creative scene.

Such a huge part of what has made Junky great are the wonderful people that have stocked their stuff here and put on events here. What began as a room with comics and graphic novels has now become a safe and wonderful creative space filled with the work of people that support one another. For this wonderful community, we are eternally grateful.

Now this is where we are asking for your help.

In order to be able to make this move and keep Junky alive and kicking we desperately need help. This move is going to cost us and being in a physical shop has come with a whole lot of debt. The only way to move is if we try and get rid of it so we can start afresh in this wonderful new creative collective. This is an opportunity to keep Junky going so we can continue to put on events and provide a space that supports the local creative community.

This space means so much to us and if you have anything to give, any and every donation will be hugely appreciated. Every single dollar from this fundraiser will be used to pay off our outstanding rent so we can move into the new space and start afresh.

Along with this Gofundme we are also going to put on some kickass events at Junky to send off 93 Vulture Street in style. We will make sure to update this page on events happening as well as posting it about them on our Facebook page and our Instagram.

So, stay tuned as we kick off this next chapter in style.

Thanks so much everyone <3
