“We Live in a Refugee Camp in Calais, France. Some people call it the Jungle. We make Radio Programmes.”
Listen to Jungala Radio

Jungala Radio is based in the “Jungle” refugee camp in Calais, France and provides a digital learning space for refugees to learn the art of community radio broadcasting.
Jungala Radio station was named by an inspiring 12-year-old who resides in the camp. She is learning to use digital tools so she can broadcast her own digital podcasts “the jungle is where animals and insects sleep and we are not animals” she remarks. “La” means “No” in Arabic hence the name Junga-La, Jungle No.

We operate under the Ethos of Community Radio to achieve the following:

• Promote the ‘right to communicate’ and the free flow of information.

• Contribute to the democratic process and a pluralist society.

• Have their ownership communally representative and editorially independent.

• To honestly inform and provide a right of access, particularly to minorities.

• To foster exchange between community media activists.

How we do this?

We do this by providing person-centred training in community broadcasting for refugee volunteers in Calais. We provide a digital space and it is used as an outlet for creativity and exploration. Volunteers learn how to create their own podcasts on a topic of interest ranging from politics to music to storytelling.

Training sessions consist of group work, interview and broadcasting techniques, translation interview techniques, editing and post production skills. We use social media platforms to broadcast our radio podcasts to the public domain using Twitter , Facebook , Youtube , Soundcloud  and www.jungala.com .

Funding

October 2016 French Authorities demolished the camp in Camp in Calais. Many of our participants are now spread out across France and the UK. We want to continue supporting them by providing equipment and internet access so they can continue with making radio programmes.

Why Jungala?

We want to provide the tools, knowledge, equipment and support that will create a permanent outlet for expression, something so valuable but often forgotten. The station provides a platform for people to communicate their own personal narratives, ideas, music and interests to the global community thus raising issues of global awareness.

The digital radio station provides an opportunity for refugees to counterbalance the mainstream narrative that so often dismisses the human element of this current crisis.

Check out our Facebook  page for more details on life on the camp and the progression of our project.
