Bella's Vet Bills

Donation protected
On Wednesday, April 19th the lovely Mody Bossy's dog Bella was visciously attacked by another dog. The dog's owner is not taking any responsibilty for the unprovoked actions of his dog, leaving Mody to pay for veterinary care alone. Anyone who knows Mody knows her love of animals and knows how big her heart is. If the tables were turned she wouldn't hesitate to help in any way she could :) Any money left over after Bella is taken care of will be donated to a local dog rescue society. Thanks everyone, any amount will help :)

My Easter Story
MODY BOSSY·WEDNESDAY, APRIL 19, 2017
Once upon a time, well, this past Saturday actually, I went out adventuring with my 2 g-kids and my dog Bella. The boys (aged 3 and 7) were armed with trowels and gardening forks and I with veggies and water and dry clothes and we were prepared to climb any hills or mountains and to dig our way to the Centre of the Earth! As we walked into the open field area at the end of Hallowell Rd, toward the ocean, the boys saw 2 ginormous hills on our left and with excitement, asked to climb and dig there! I thought it was commercial property, closed for the Easter weekend and desolate of any people or activity. It was wide open and empty and there was nothing dangerous to be seen other than a steam roller with a flat tire which was further down. The boys dove at the closest hill with shovels and gusto and got right to it while I used the “chuck-it” ball thrower to exercise Bella. Bella is about 40 lbs, a border collie X blue heeler aged 7 ½ years. When there is a ball in the vicinity, Bella has no eyes for anything else, is completely and absolutely focused on the fetching game. On the 5th or 6th throw, as Bella reached the ball a dog came barreling out from behind the hills so presumably from the back end of the house or yard about 30 or 40 yards away, alone on that side of the street/area and behind the hills and on Songhees Reservation land. This dog made a bee line full speed straight to Bella. As I was on the other side of the open area, what I saw was the dog streaking out and then the barking and screaming and 2 bodies entwined. I ran over right away and saw it was a pit-bull. In the early 80’s my partner at the time rescued and raised a few pit-bulls so I am quite familiar with the breed. This one was classic pit-bull. A glossy brown colour, short in stature, all muscle and large jowls and wide muscled shoulders and neck to support its’ big head. When I got there, it had my dog by the throat and she was on her back. It was shaking her as best it could and she was screaming and fighting to get away. I was pretty much in shock at this point but then my mind started and I did what I have always read about a dog fight. Try to grab the dogs by the back legs and lift them up (wheelbarrow style) and get them off balance and pull them backwards. And this is what I did to the pit-bull. I tried with everything I had to pull that dog off my girl, to no or little effect. When I would lose strength from the exertion and fatigue of effort and shock no doubt, I dropped the legs and breathed (I remember being so winded, gasping and sides heaving) hard and tried to call out/scream for someone to come get their dog, that their dog was killing my dog. And then desperate to save her I would grab those back legs again and pull, and try to lift the dog as high as I could in the air and get it off balance and to release my dog. Once I tried grabbing it by the esophagus and squeezing to try to close-off its air and/or render it unconscious but I hadn’t the strength to maintain a choke-hold. The pitty’s focus was incredible. It was not kicking or fighting me back with its paws or legs, it was just fully extended, front legs straight out along its’ body and back legs straight down once I grabbed the legs and with its jaws clamped onto my dogs’ throat. Once we (combined effort of me and my dog?) got it off for a slight moment and my dog started to scramble away but the pit-bull managed to launch itself forward out of my grasp of its back legs and back onto my dogs throat. It was only using its jaws/mouth. I was screaming and yelling when I had breath. And once, on my last try, probably after at least 10 minutes of effort and while it was twisted with its’ belly up and exposed as I held its’ legs and it maintained its’ death grip on my dog, I tried to stomp on its’ genitalia to get it to release but I had no strength left at that point. My foot was probably like so much wind on its’ body. As I struggled and wept inside wondering how long it would take, a young man finally came running out from the same area the dog had come from screaming “dogname…what the fuck are you doing?” At least, I think it was the dogs’ name he said, maybe it was to me his screams were addressed. And when he got there and grabbed his dog, thank every god and goddess in the universe, it let Bella go. I was shaken and shocked and stumbled around to Bella and touched her as she rose and managed to beg her to come with me as she stood. She seemed able to walk slowly beside me. The young man, to whom I was so grateful for ending things then began hurling invective, threatening me with police action and yelling that I was trespassing on the res (reservation property) and that my dog had attacked his dog. He didn’t let up. He just didn’t let up screaming at me, threatening me and accusing me of hurting his dog, claiming he had seen me attacking it or hurting it (I was surely trying at the end) over and over that I was on res land and trespassing. He went back the way he had come still yelling at me and I went back the way I had come and gathered my boys (who had stayed far off and away out of the way) and said we had to go. As we headed back toward the car along the path, the young man walked across a bush on his side of the area and kept up the yelling and threatening me the whole time. When I got back to my car and was buckling the boys in and getting my dog into the car, a cyclist stopped as the young man came toward me still yelling. He told the guy to back off and kept him away from me. When I was done at the car I had this vague thought I should get his contact info, his name and number in case I needed a witness to the abuse from the young man. He came over and talked to me reassuringly and helped me warn other cars arriving with their dogs to walk them. He also urged me and helped me to call 911 and stayed by me and talked to the 911 people when I couldn’t or when Bella was shrieking out in panic. 911 asked me if I could stay there and wait until CRD/Animal Control arrived and the RCMP. Which I did. At one point the young man got in his vehicle with someone and when they came back after a couple of minutes they stopped and the mum or grandmum got out and also verbally attacked me and accused me of harming their dog and trespassing and that I had no rights and was entirely at fault. John (cyclist) left shortly after the CRD officer arrived. The RCMP said they knew who the young man was. I thought Bella wasn’t too, too badly injured at that point as the blood covering her neck and chest wasn’t dark red and flowing, it seemed to be mostly spread on her fur so I waited until CRD and the RCMP said I could leave to go get medical aid for my dog. I was pretty shaken up and voice dialed Jake who gave me clear instructions on how to get to the animal hospital by Mayfair and he met me there pretty quickly after. He took the boys back to my place once I was allowed to be in the back with Bella. It was then I noticed one of her long canine incisors was sticking out to the side, straight out. She was pretty roused up and panicked and kept breaking out into wild shaking and shrieking but I was able to talk to her and pet her and soothe her down and it was obvious I had to stay with her. I kind of insisted actually and so when they eventually catheterized her back leg I kept her calm. And I brought her to the surgery when they were ready for her and held her while they injected the full sedation and helped lift her onto the table. The damage was worse than they thought and instead of 45 minutes to patch her up it took something like 2 – 2 ½ hours. Both her canine incisors were torn out (luckily fully and wholly intact so no oral surgery/root canals are required) and the holes stitched. She had nine 2 to 5 cm puncture wounds which were flushed and most stitched up, with one over her left arm left open to help drain. She also had a drain tube stitched in (now removed) on a wound on her right shoulder. The left side of her neck had 3 or 4 bad lacerations, all stitched up. And the most terrifying was learning that one of the wounds on her right chest was through the tissue and her jugular vein was exposed. That close to death. I can only hope my efforts to free her didn’t exacerbate her injuries but helped mitigate the potential damage that could have been done and that the dog’s owners’ arrival no matter how late, saved her life. I am unharmed although was very, stiff and sore the next day and my left wrist was wrenched or over used so it is still tender and sore. Bella, that surprisingly tough little drama queen of mine, is doing as well as can be expected! When Jake and Max showed up the next morning to help with the Easter breakfast and duck egg (the bunny became a duck somehow) hunt she valiantly albeit with less than her normal gusto, barked at the intruders until they came to her with love and patting. She was quiet through the hunt and through our eggs benny breakfast with my boys, my g-kids and their parents who arrived to get my mad news (GAK!) and for the hunt and breakfast. It was good fun! (After everyone left Bella and I just lay down together, turned off auto-pilot and prepared to sleep and heal. It could have been a helluva lot worse. Happy belated Easter everyone! All’s well that ends well chez G-Mode!

POST NOTE: Hope this isn’t disturbing but here is a small capture of my photos. CRD arrives to talk to me tomorrow having received my report. I can only hope that this dog will be deemed dangerous by them and if so I have grounds to launch a civil suit to try to claim reimbursement for my Vet costs, at this time $1043. But honestly it doesn’t look too good. :-
