LOCAL HIGH SCHOOL TEAM INVITED TO PERFORM AT THE CITRUS BOWL IN ORLANDO, FL

·         Academic Magnet Cheer team is invited to perform at the 2019 Citrus Bowl on New Year’s Day.

·         Girls are working diligently on fundraising efforts to be able to attend this exclusive opportunity.

·         Cheerleaders will travel to Orlando, FL to rehearse for the big game, and as a reward for their exceptional performance, they also get to visit Disney World!

In June the 14-member all girl Academic Magnet cheer squad traveled to Clemson University for a week of intensive training at a Universal Cheer Association (UCA) camp. These camps focus on proper safety techniques, entertainment of fans at games through cheers and dances, and traditional school leadership. The squad’s camp performance was outstanding, taking home first place trophies in both Cheer and Overall Performance and earning the ‘Superior Squad’ distinction along with several other honors and awards.  Because of their accolades, the team earned an exclusive invitation to travel to Orlando, FL, along with other elite cheerleaders and dancers. The team will perform on the field during the 2019 Citrus Bowl pre-game as well as visit the Happiest Place on Earth, Walt Disney World® Resort.  They will spend time in rehearsals preparing for the New Year’s Day performance in front of 60,000 fans. Varsity Spirit, the parent company of UCA, brings this unique opportunity to those elite cheer and dance teams around the country.

The Citrus Bowl has been a college football tradition since 1947 and has hosted winning programs such as the University of South Carolina, LSU, Notre Dame, Georgia, and Michigan to name a few in recent years. The pre-game performance offers cheerleaders and dancers the opportunity to perform at the 7th oldest collegiate bowl in the country.  This experience is a once in a life-time opportunity for our girls.  Many will never have the opportunity to cheer at the collegiate level, so this is a way to see what that feels like.

Of course the amount to fund this opportunity is a steep one, nearing $20,000, but this team is not afraid of hard work.  With this goal set and their strong work ethic, it’s time to roll up the sleeves.  There are three bake sales to be held at the car show at Mount Pleasant Towne Center Saturday mornings, and they also are working two Krispy Kreme fundraisers during the month of October. Addionally this GoFundMe page has also been set up in their name to allow people from all over to help the girls achieve this dream.  They are doing all of this while cheering at football games, entering their own competition season, performing community service, and of course working hard on their studies.  Taking almost exclusively all honors and AP level course work, no cheerleader has less than a 4.0 GPA at the state’s top ranked high school. This squad has an amazing group of young leaders who work hard to support their school and this Lowcountry community; please cheer them on and help them get to the Citrus Bowl!
