Ataxia Crisis in Veracruz Mexico
What is the campaign about?
My name is Cory Mathew Hannan, I am an ataxia patient. I moved to Mexico in 2014 to start a NGO for people suffering the same condition I have ATAXIA. When I arrived Mexico, I only had two contacts, two suitcase and $2000 USD to my name, shortly after arriving , I travelled to a small mountain town in Veracruz, known to have a cluster of ataxia patients, little did I know the magnitude of the situation.
This poverty stricken town (tlaltetela) and six other surrounding small towns contain are home to largest ataxia SCA7 population in the world (125 known cases within a 11 mile radius) with over 500 family members in waiting a diagnostic each with a 50% chance of manifesting this horrible very rare neurodegenerative disease.
After conducting 10 patients interviews to determine the needs and assess the situation, I decided to stay in this town Tlaltetela and trated to work on behave of the persons and families affected, most of which 80% live in poverty 40% in extreme poverty with a daily average income $.82 yes (82 cents a day), many have been abandoned by family members and are left alone in a dark room with no ventilation, blind, confined to bed or wheelchair, unable to speak clearly or coordinate muscle movements, medcial attention is lacking has this part of Mexico is still considered a third world country, physical , mental and sexual abuse are common, discrimination, lack of access to food and infrastructure are only some of the problems we face.
Over the last two years 7 children’s lives have been cut short to computations with ataxia, and 14 new children have developed ataxia SCA7 in the 11 mile radius over the same two year time period
The new government of Mexico has declared a change in public polices and has revoked all public funding to NGO’s, leaving organization like Ataxia Mexico without access to public funding.
Today operate two Medical and Rehabilitation clinics and Food Bank that delivery’s 150 monthly food allotments in eight different towns in the affected zone, education , social and personal development workshop, we have done all of this using my SSDI pension from the USA $1751 a month,

About the Founder:
My name is Cory Mathew Hannan
Bron in Long Beach, Ca
I am a patient and founder of Ataxia Mexico A.C. (ONG)
I acquired ataxia in 2011 after contracting " legionnaires pneumonia" from a contaminated water source, three days later I was induced into a coma in Orlando Florida , I stayed in comma for twelve days. I woke up un able to speck, coordinate movements "Lance Adams Syndrome" which has left me permanently disabled with symptoms of ataxia and myoclonus.
Since that date I have dedicated my life to changing humanity and bring awareness to ataxia trough social assistance programs for ALL people with disabilities
While living and volunteering in Argentina (2014) Ataxia Argentina, I realized that there was no Ataxia Association in Mexico; It was very painful for me to think that thousands of people could be suffering from ataxia.
On September 2, 2014, I moved to Mexico, with two contacts, two suitcases and two thousand dollars in my name, to try and create an NGO.
From that date and until today we have implemented various support programs for children with disabilities and adults with ataxia.
