Misión Boricua is a non-profit 501c3 organization established in 2016 by small group of individuals within the community who sought to preserve Puerto Rican culture and promote civic engagement within the Puerto Rican Diaspora of Central Florida. Mission Boricua is a local non-partisan organization made up of exclusively volunteers from a variety of religious and socioeconomic backgrounds.

Misión Boricua is focused on proposing changes to the antiquated coastwise laws of the United Sates, commonly referred o as the Jones Act. This legislation is economically strangling the island of Puerto Rico by increasing cost of living, preventing the growth of entrepreneur businesses, redistributing  jobs that could be on the island to Jacksonville, and slowing the relief and reconstruction process.

The Jones Act (1920) requires goods shipped between US ports to be transported on ships that are build, owned, and operated by United States citizens or permanent residents.

Under the law, any foreign registry vessel that enters Puerto Rico must pay punitive tariffs, fees and taxes, which are passed on to the Puerto Rican consumer.

Misión Boricua is empowering and mobilizing the Puerto Rican Diaspora of Central Florida to advocate for long term economic legislatives changes, specifically the exemption of Puerto Rico from the coastwise laws of the United States, known as the Jones Act.
