Jon Sorendo Scholarship Fund

In the 2002 Oswego Varsity wrestling season, Jonathan developed sharp pains in his left ribcage durring one of his bouts in a tournament at SUNY Oswego.  He was down in points, and was visibly suffering from the discomfort.  But, Jon had heart for his sport and would not give up.  He came back and won that match in the last period, but the top seed was not allowed to continue the tournament he was favored to win.  His coach told him he needed to get looked at.  After going to the ER, the doctor couldn't find anything wrong and said that it was probably just bruised ribs.  That same night, Jonathan's mother found him sleeping at the dining room table.  Asking why he wasn't in bed, Jon said that he could not breath when laying in bed.  Immediately his mom took him to a Syracuse hospital where Jon was diagnosed with cardiomyopathy.  (Cardiomyopathy, or heart muscle disease, is a type of progressive heart disease in which the heart is abnormally enlarged, thickened, and/or stiffened. As a result, the heart muscle's ability to pump blood is less efficient, often causing heart failure and the backup of blood into the lungs or rest of the body. The disease can also cause abnormal heart rhythms.)  A heart transplant was needed to save Jon's life.  It took many months before he received the gift of life, but we were and are still forever grateful for his donor and her family.  Jon passed away 10 years later from complications, but thanks to his donor, Jon lived more in those 10 years than most live in a lifetime.  Jon's friends and family are starting a memorial scholarship in his name.
This campaign is for the 2019-2020 scholarships because we already raised $2000 and awarded 12 scholarships to deserving wrestlers at the youth, modified, Junior Varsity and varsity levels for the 2018-2019 season.
The awards will be used for off season camps and some have already used theirs for freestyle club and tournament fees.
Thank you all for your contributions and for helping the Oswego Wrestling program in Jon's name.
