Jon Mroz' Motorcycle Accident Recovery

Donation protected

The Crash

On January 14th, after a day of hiking in Joshua Tree National Park, Jon was returning to San Diego on highway 62. It started to rain but quickly became a downpour. Jon hit a flash flood on the road. As he describes it, “by the time I wiped my helmet clear of the water and grime, I was already in the median.” He scraped his body against a guardrail for over 30 feet before he crashed his motorcycle into the pavement.

Recovery

Miraculously, a sheriff arrived on site almost immediately and rushed him to Desert Regional Medical in Palm Springs, where doctors performed three emergency fasciotomies to save his left arm. Jon broke both of his arms, shattered his left completely as well as his right wrist. He now has 2 plates, 4 screws, and 8 pins in his left arm, and 2 screws in his right arm.

Jon has been in the hospital for the past 15 days. He has been transferred to the trauma center at UCSD Hillcrest Hospital and will likely stay here for at leat another month for additional surgeries and rehabilitation. This includes fusing two of his bones together which otherwise will no longer work. Jon has started to have feeling in his fingers again which is a very positive sign. It’s unclear how much functionality he will regain on his left arm but his right should eventually make a full recovery.

He needs our help.

Jon’s road to recovery will be long and difficult. He is still in a great deal of pain. And he could use our support and love to help him get back on his feet. At the time of Jon’s accident, he was continuing his cybersecurity studies but was unemployed. His motorcycle- his primary means of transportation- is completely totaled. Even if it wasn’t Jon said he will never get on a bike again. Jon’s phone was also smashed, so he does not have a way to communicate regularly without the support of the hospital staff. He’s in urgent need of financial support to help him cover mounting medical costs and rehabilitation. He will also need a car and a phone, at a minimum, to help him get commute to physical therapy once he is discharged at the end of next month. More than anything, Jon wants to get his life back together so he can be a present and able-bodied father to his little girl. She is the only thing he thinks or talks about, and he misses her every moment.

Other ways Jon needs help: Jon is alone. None of his family live anywhere close by. He could use a friend or some company. He is in room 1124 in 11 West Tower at UCSD Hillcrest in San Diego.  If anyone wants to pay Jon a visit to cheer him up and encourage him on his road to recovery, I guarantee you would make his day or night. Just don’t make fun of his pajamas (too much).

About this gofundme
As Jon is not in a condition that allows him to type, I have assisted him in setting up this gofundme. I’ve known Jon for over a decade. He’s an incredibly loyal friend and the kind of guy who would be there for me if I was in that hospital bed instead of him. Let’s show him some love and help him get back on his feet. He would do the same for you if he could.
