Greetings everyone, my name is Susan Rother and I am raising money for my best friend and sister Carol. Carol is out-going beautiful person who enjoys yoga, horseback riding, kayaking and glass mosaic. Carol is a strong warrior who has helped all of her family and friends whenever they need it. She was my son Jeremy's life saving kidney donor in 2001.
She has been fighting bladder cancer(Stage 3) since Oct 2016. After diagnosis she went to the Mayo Clinic for a second opinion. Both oncologists wanted Carol to remove her bladder followed by Chemo and radiation. Having 1 kidney(from being a donor)complicated the decision of whether to do Chemo and radiation as those therapy's can attack the kidney as well as other organs.
This started her on a journey for alternative treatments. Some of the places she found valuable information was "The Truth About Cancer" and "Chris Beat Cancer" and Gerson Institute. Common principles in all of these treatments include:
*Organic vegan diet
*Stress management, exercise (yoga and meditation)
*Juicing
*Hyperbaric Oxygen Chamber
*Chiropractic Care
*High dose Vitamin C IV
*Note- all not covered by Insurance
In May 2017 the tumors metastasized (now Stage 4) to lymph nodes in the left abdomen. In October 2017 Carol found Dr. Konety and Dr. Goupta at the U of M . These doctors gave hope of trials or Immunotherapy but she must have had tried Chemo with no positive results to qualify.
In December 2017 thru March 2018 Carol underwent 6 cycles of Chemo. The scan after Chemo showed the tumors were necrotic (hollow) but were still growing. This meant the Chemo had failed which opened the door to trials and Immunotherapy.
April 2018 a surgery was preformed to remove part of the bladder (allowing Carol to keep her bladder), lymph nodes on right and left side of the abdomen and tumors in the bladder and abdomen. The tumors had engulfed a major artery so a vascular surgeon was called in to do a graph. Because of complications the 2 hr surgery turned into 9+ hours.
In May 2018 a blood clot developed in Carols left leg. To get rid of this she receives 2 injections daily of a blood thinner.
Also in May 2018 Carol started Keytruda, a immunotherapy treatment. After 3 cycles the scan showed that the tumor had grown from .5 cm to 5.5 cm in three months. At this point Carol was told that the prognosis for life was 6 to 9 months.
Carols Oncologist wants her to do more Chemo. With a hemoglobin of 8-8.5(anemic) she feels that she is not able to handle Chemo again.
Carol is starting Enzyme therapy and restarting High dose Vitamin C IV therapy to fight this cancer. Enzyme therapy teaches your body to fight it's own cancer. The enzymes have the ability the strip the protein coating off of the cancer cells allowing the body's immune system to identify and kill the cancer cells. It also helps in repairing the devastating effects of Chemotherapy.
Both of these therapy's are not going to be covered by insurance. The monetary goal above includes the cost of both of these therapy's.
