The John H. Watson Fund

The BSI and Friends Weekend is an annual gathering of Sherlock Holmes enthusiasts that takes place in New York City. It's been happening every year since 1934, and each decade it seems as if there's another day added to the "weekend" so that it now stretches from Wednsday through Sunday.

To many Sherlockians, it's like Christmas morning. The excitement grows as the time nears, knowing that in a very little while, you'll have a chance to meet up with other people that share this peculiar hobby like you do - a fascination with all things related to Sherlock Holmes, the greatest detective who (n)ever lived. Whether you're attending for the first or twenty-first time, there's a sense of anticipation and wonder, knowing you'll be in a room with smart, witty and fun people, and that you'll reconnect with old friends and make new ones.

But this feeling comes at a cost: the BSI & Friends Weekend can be expensive. From the cost of travel to the accommodations and then all of the meals and receptions, it can really add up.

So, in the late 1980s, Tom Stix, Jr., the head of the Baker Street Irregulars, founded the John H. Watson Fund . This is a self-liquidating fund that offers financial assistance to all Sherlockians (membership in the BSI is not required) who might otherwise not be able to participate in the weekend's festivities. A carefully pseudonymous John H. Watson presides over the fund and welcomes contributions, which until now have only been by check and by virtue of the fundraising efforts during the Weekend.

But many Sherlockians have noted that they'd contribute via credit card if they could. So we've created this option, with a completely random campaign goal (we neither expect to reach nor exceed this goal - but GoFundMe required a number). We'll be happy with whatever we can raise.

Here's the catch:
In order to make funds available for the BSI Weekend in January 2017, we need to have funds received no later than December 2, 2016.

I Hear of Sherlock Everywhere will collect your generous donations and pass them along anonymously to Dr. Watson - anonymity on both ends is essential. When you make your donation, please do NOT list your name to be shown on the campaign site. Request anonymity. THIS IS IMPORTANT.

We hope that, if this moves you, you'll consider contributing to the John H. Watson Fund. And if you'd like information on how to request support from the Watson Fund, please click here .
