John Wayne Court Road Improvements

We will be passing out printed letters in the neighborhood that read:

Dear Neighbor:                                         January, 2019

We, (Richard & Sylvia Tomberlin and John & Diane Glover)  have lived in the neighborhood for over 30 years. At one time we had ditches and a crown on the dirt roads.  That has all washed away. After heavy rainfalls, our roads are left with more and more deep holes, and water does not drain to the sides as it should.  Many drain areas have grown up with weeds and sand and no longer hold the runoff, and culverts have decayed or been filled with debris.

Our primary concern is the main entrance to the neighborhood, John Wayne Court, because this is the road EVERYONE uses to get home. Roads that extend off John Wayne Court have mainly become the responsibility of those living on them, such as Springhawk, Fieldcrest, and Nuts Rut, with the exception of entrance ways to those roads where no property owners abutt them. We live on Nuts Rut and our specific neighborhood comes together to maintain our road.

The county has told us in the past that they are not taking on any new dirt roads for maintenance.  Therefore, it will require cooperation among neighbors to keep the roads passable. This includes all of us driving SLOWLY on the roads in ways that help maintain as good a condition as possible. Fast driving and splashing puddles adds to the dilemma.

We have several men with tractors who have worked together during the past 30 years to grade and dig ditches where needed. We also have men in the neighborhood who have experience with road work and can advise the best way to work this project.  Of course it would be best to put culverts at every driveway and direct the runoff to previous holding areas, but, we have found it difficult to have 100% participation, therefore rendering that option null and void.

As you know it is costly to purchase diesel for these tractors.  We are asking that you consider giving a generous donation as soon as possible to help purchase the necessary road base and fuel to get our roads in better condition.  There are approximately 60-75 homes in the Tom Roberts Neighborhood using John Wayne Court. If everyone gave a minimum of $50-100 (or whatever you can) that would be used only for this purpose, we could make progress on this issue. It has been estimated to take a minimum of $3500 just to begin to accomplish this goal.  Now that we have had extraordinarily heavy rains recently resulting in sinking of the road in several places, the cost may be far beyond that.  Keep in mind that equipment and labor are being donated.

As a former unofficial secretary of the neighborhood, Sylvia Tomberlin would volunteer again as secretary and accountant of the monies collected.  She would keep a record of all monies received and receipts for all purchases. Any monies remaining after the initial road repair would be held in a separate neighborhood account and used ONLY for ongoing maintenance issues, specifically related to John Wayne Court.

We are going to collect donations through the month of January, hoping to do major repairs in February, depending on the amount provided.  Minor, temporary repairs may begin before then if we have the financial support to do so.
