John Paul’s Cancer Treatment Fundraiser

Most of you may know him as John Paul, JP, JPV, or Valle, but for those of you that don’t know him, here is a little about him. JP is 23 years old and one of the strongest, smartest, loving, caring, and generous individuals you'd be fortunate to know.

During his undergraduate career, he worked in the Chemistry department as a chemical stockroom personnel, was secretary for the department, was a teaching assistant, and continues to do research in the field of Chemistry. He even went as far as to become a published author for his findings in his undergraduate research. Despite having his hands full working and studying, JP made the time to be an active member of the community by volunteering constantly through the Rotaract club of UTRGV. In Fall of 2018, JP was accepted to the Chemistry master’s program and was concurrently working as a chemical analyst to pay for his tuition and expenses.

In 2017, he began having problems with his right eye, experiencing blurred and double vision. He decided to see an optometrist and was advised to start doing eye exercises. As time went by, his conditions worsened, and he started experiencing loss of balance, loss of facial functions, and began struggling with simple tasks like eating and drinking. He was referred to a neurologist who scheduled an MRI. Unfortunately, before the appointment, JP noticed he began to slur some of his words and told his mom. She immediately rushed him to the ER where they performed a CAT scan which revealed multiple masses and lesions on his brain, later determined to be tumors. Biopsies were taken of the tumor cells and the tumors were diagnosed to be cancerous germinomas. Doctors are still in the process of creating a treatment plan, but they will involve chemo and radiation therapy.

The doctor stated that this was an unusual diagnosis for such a healthy young man. Since his diagnosis, JP has drastically changed his perspective on life. Although this was an unexpected and life altering event, JP is not alone. With the support of his friends and family, JP has remained calm, strong, and patient as his treatment is being planned. The money raised through this GoFundMe will be used directly for medical expenses, and future specialized treatments. Updates will be posted as they are received. Any form of donations are greatly appreciated, however, if you cannot donate, please share and keep him in your prayers. Thank you.
