John Kumen's Children

Donation protected
*We have confirmation of a donor to match 100% of whatever we raise here up to the goal* My dear friend John Kudumoch Kumen passed away in South Sudan on May 10, 2019 of an infection that was likely otherwise treatable in Boma, South Sudan. Too far from medical assistance. I loved Kudumoch. I'm heartbroken. The world has lost a humble light in a dark place.

I am raising money to support his family, including his one wife and many children under his care. He was the sole breadwinner.

He was a peacemaker and respected in his community. He only ever tried to help people, often at his own expense. He used whatever leverage he had for the Good. (Waking me in the night in remote S. Sudan to authorize a boat to carry a medical emergency to a bush hospital; advising more powerful people with his wisdom to address violence peacefully; taking orphans into his humble home.) He was not famous. He was poor.

When S. Sudan collapsed he moved his family to a refugee camp in Uganda. He scrambled to pay for school fees. For additional food to meet his family's needs.

His biography is one of a saint, you will never know. I could tell you long stories of his life and his work. Of our time in the bush.

He leaves behind his wife, Mary, and 5 children (3 under age 10), as well as 3 other children that he had taken into his home.

I will manage funds with my friend Chris W. (also close to John and his family) ensuring it goes as far as possible over time to manage emergency health needs (including food if need be) of the family and the children's school requirements. I would like it to stretch several years.

I'm asking you to help me (and Chris W) honor the legacy of this man through supporting his wife and kids. We utilize an app to send funds to them already through mobile money, directly from our accounts (called Wave). I will make a separate account for this purpose.

Thank you for considering supporting the family of a quiet peacemaker in a remote and often very harsh part of the world.
