John Kennedy: Adapting to life with paralysis

On Saturday October 6th, 2018, John fell from a ladder at his home in Carrigadrohid while carrying out a simple task. He was airlifted to Cork University Hospital where it was revealed that he had broken 2 vertebrae in his back (T11 & T12) and had a badly broken arm. He was transferred to the national spinal injury unit in the Mater hospital, Dublin. He underwent surgery to stabilise his back and his arm.
Unfortunately, despite the best efforts of the surgical team, John has a complete spinal cord injury which means he is paralysed from the waist down. Nothing could prepare John or his family for such a devastating occurrence. The road ahead is going to be both physically and emotionally challenging, but there are also many costs involved to allow John live his life to the fullest.
John is currently still in Cork University hospital recovering from surgery and will then go to Dun Laoghaire national rehabilitation hospital to commence an extensive rehabilitation programme to adapt to life as a paraplegic.
John is a devoted husband to Ina and loving father of a beautiful 3 year old girl, Jessica. He is also a dedicated worker who gives 100% to everything he does and is very goal focused. John has always been very active and is involved in Coachford cycling club which he attended on a routine basis and has participated in marathons, triathlons and other adventure races.
We John’s family, the extended Kennedy and O’Sullivan’s, have set up this page to help alleviate the financial burden on John and assist in getting the essentials such as Adapted housing, medical equipment and a vehicle to name just a few.
