The OFFICIAL John H. Kim Recovery Fund approved by his family. All other crowdfunding sources are not approved or supported by his family.
On January 13, 2018, John was involved in a terrible automobile accident. He suffered major injuries including severe head trauma, severely damaged aorta, fractured spine, broken shoulder, broken arm, broken ankle and many other injuries. In addition, he lost several teeth.
It looked grim at first. Doctors told us that he had a 5% chance to survive the damaged aorta and if he did survive, he would most likely lose the use of his left side. He then had to deal with the bleeding and swelling in his brain. He was in a medically induced coma for over two weeks attached to a breathing ventilator.
Remarkably, a month later, John's aorta has shown signs of healing which has allowed him to forgo an incredibly dangerous open heart surgery for now. His blood pressure is being strictly monitored to allow further healing. This paired with the news that the brain bleeding is resolving gives everyone hope for John's healing. We are hoping to remove the ventilator very soon. Once removed, John will be on a trach collar which allows him to breath on his own. He seems to recognize his family members with a big "John Kim" smile and responds to some various commands.
The good news is that John is finally on the road to recovery. We recognize it will be a long and challenging road ahead. We expect it to be a multi year process. John will have to go through extensive rehabilitation both physically and mentally. His rehab will include but not limited to: physical therapy, speech therapy, neurological rehab & skilled nursing care. Unfortunately, John’s insurance policy will not adequately cover the level of rehabilitation care necessary to return him close to his former self; thus, the need for this fundraising campaign. The money that is raised on John's behalf will promptly go to his comprehensive rehabilitation care. Furthermore, depending on how his rehab goes, the funds may have to be directed to his future needs involving the use of a wheelchair incuding any and all accommodations necessary. We obviously hope and pray for the best possible outcome from his rehab but we need to plan for it accordingly in case wheelchair confinement becomes a reality. Regardless, John will need extensive care probably for the rest of his life. It is critical that we start raising money today to get his rehab started.
John has a tremendous amount of loving, caring and loyal friends who want to see John back on his feet as soon as possible. However, for those who do not know John personally, here is a little bit of information about him.
John is the oldest of six kids from parents who emigrated from South Korea. He graduated from The University of Texas with a degree in Petroleum Land Management. He has been in the oil and gas industry for most of his career. Anyone who knows John knows he is a caring and devoted family man. He has a loving daughter and son both of whom are married and planning for their future families. John is also a loyal friend with a big heart that would do anything within his powers to help a friend in need. Our brother is extremely proud to be a Longhorn and one of the biggest Longhorn fan around. In fact, we rarely see him without wearing some kind of UT gear. He grew up in Houston, TX where he currently resides. He also loves the Texans, Astros and Rockets. John truly cares about the Houston community and is quite active in various ways. He is heavily involved in the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo as part of the volunteer group, The Gatekeepers. This is a tight knit group whom he considers as family. He has been volunteering for over a decade now and has made numerous life long friends. John was also the founder of the Houston Asian Chamber of Commerce and has dedicated over 20+ years of service and still remains an active member. He works with a lot of local leaders to help integrate Asian businesses into the Houston community.
I know if John could talk, he would want to thank everyone for their love, support and prayers. He would certainly end it with a "Hook'em Horns!"
