John Glenn Soccer - Raguso Memorial

$10,056 of $8,000 goal

Raised by 77 people in 11 months
The Elwood-John Glenn Soccer Program is dedicating this upcoming 2018 season in honor of former player and American hero, MSgt Christopher Raguso (class of 1997).  Chris, a member of the Air National Guard’s 106th Air Rescue Wing, was one of seven servicemen that made the ultimate sacrifice when their helicopter went down on March 15th during a combat mission in Western Iraq while supporting coalition forces in Operation Inherent Resolve, the war against ISIS.  Chris was a treasured father, husband, son and brother, as well as a 6-time decorated FDNY Lieutenant during his 13-year career at Engine 249/Ladder 113 in Brooklyn and Engine 302/Ladder 155 in Queens.  Lt Chris was also a 20-year volunteer with the Commack Fire Department, who dedicated his life to helping others.

The soccer program is in search of financial support to help fund a memorial in honor of Chris to be dedicated on Saturday, September 22, 2018 after a varsity home game and before its annual alumni game.  All excess proceeds from this fundraising effort will be donated to the Raguso family through the 39&One Foundation, started by Chris's family, recognizing the 39 years and 1 day Chris was with us, either cherishing every moment with his friends and family, or rescuing those that needed saving.  The memorial will be located alongside the scoreboard on the varsity soccer field, including a 25-foot flagpole flying all of the flags that Chris represented, as well as a plaque with his name and the saying, "These Things We Do, That Others May Live." Additionally, all of the soccer program's jerseys will feature an arm patch in his memory.

Chris's legacy is that of the ultimate teammate.  The torch he carried in the name of sacrifice and service will burn eternally in the hearts and minds of those that knew him.  Hopefully, with your help in erecting this memorial, young men and women -- the students of today and tomorrow -- will learn of him, and carry his torch forward by embracing all that he stood for.

Thanks for your support!

Hi everyone:

I wanted to send an update about the great event we had in honor of Msgt. Christopher J Raguso this past Saturday, September 22nd. On the varsity soccer field, after the teams dominant win to keep their undefeated season going, the program had an incredible turnout from students, faculty, and alumni to celebrate the life of a former student, teammate, and American hero. A special thanks goes out to Coach Hanner for making all a success, as well as Chris’s family for all their blessings and support in making this tribute. For those that couldn’t make it, check out some pics below of the memorial. Coach installed some uplighting so the flag pole remains lit at night, a fitting touch. Finally, a special thanks to all of you that have generously donated to this site, and helped spread the word. We can now write a very meaningful check to the 39&One Foundation started by Chris’s father to help support his son’s family.

Sincerely,

Peter Finelli

Hi everyone: I wanted to share some great news. The John Glenn High School Soccer Program’s Christopher Raguso Memorial fundraising campaign has surpassed its initial goal of $6,000! Thanks to the very generous friends of the program that have donated and spread the word, as well as the hard work of Coach Lou Hanner, this year’s program is going to include new patches in honor of Chris on every jersey, a new flag pole next to the varsity scoreboard that will fly the flags Chris so heroically represented, and a monument in his name at the foot of the flagpole.

I would love to see as many of you in attendance as possible at the upcoming dedication ceremony, to be held on Saturday, September 22nd at the John Glenn varsity soccer field, shortly after the 10 am home game. Following the ceremony, the annual alumni soccer game will take place including special tee shirts in Chris's honor, available to anyone that has donated. Please come out to support the program, as well as Chris’s friends and family, in making Chris's legacy a permanent fixture at the high school for all to celebrate.

As we stated at the launch of this campaign, all excess proceeds from this fundraising effort will be donated to the Raguso family through the 39&One Foundation, recognizing the 39-years and 1-day Chris was with us. Inspired by Chris, we are confident there is more that can be done here. As such, we are raising our goal to $8,000!

To those that receive this update having already generously donated – we can’t thank you enough. Your ongoing support by spreading the word will be invaluable. To those that are receiving this for the first time, any amount would be greatly appreciated and of course, please spread the word to anyone that can help!

Thanks for your support!
