Help Joel Access Long-term Care

Donation protected
When our loved ones get sick, we take care of them. But what happens after we’ve exhausted the help we can reasonably ask of our families? This is where friends and the greater support network of the community need to pull together and help.

We want you to meet Robin and Joel (Jo), if you don’t already know them, and listen to their story. Decide for yourself if you can be part of their support network with us. There is so much to say about Joel, but I will never tell his story and Robin's with the depth and compassion that Shannon Proudfoot did for Maclean's magazine in September 2015:

In short, Jo has an extremely rare and aggressive form of Alzheimer’s disease. While most Alzheimer’s patients are well over 65 years of age, Jo is 41 and has been living with his disease for over 4 years. He has been robbed of time with friends and family and his career.

This is where our campaign begins. Over the last 4 years, Jo has required an increasing amount of care. Robin, with the help of her dad Kip and sister Taryn, has been able to meet Jo’s needs during this time. A time will come when, because of Alzheimer's, Jo will need full time care. As we've watched Robin care for Jo day in and day out, we see that time approaching. Jo needs full time, residential care.

Full time care for Jo will cost Robin about $4000 a month for the rest of Jo's life. What makes Jo's situation unique is that he's 41 years old. Robin is not yet 40. She's a full time teacher. She's still paying off both of their student loans. They never got a chance to buy a house or accumulate assets so often liquidated by surviving spouses to pay the costs of long-term care. So Robin continues, with Kip , Taryn, and family, to care for Jo at home as best they can while Robin continues to work full time and stay afloat while facing the mounting costs associated with Jo's care.

Our goal is to give Robin some peace of mind and allow her to prioritize Jo's health and well-being in all decision making about his care.

Our main purpose for this campaign though, is to allow Jo to access the care he needs with the dignity he deserves. He's a lifelong friend to many who will attest to his kindness, generosity, and good humour.

Jo deserves the best care, and Robin deserves to be able to give it to him. Let's help her do that.
