We would like to introduce you to a very special group of kids, and tell you about a wonderful opportunity to help these extraordinary young people!
J. L. Mann High School Academy, located in Greenville, South Carolina, is home to a unique group of high school students, the S.P.E.C.I.A.L.S. (Students Pursue Exceptional Challenges In All Life Skills), who also happen to have intellectual and physical disabilities (academically, they function on about a first-grade level). Some of these students, who range in age from 14 to 21, are also disadvantaged socially and financially. One of the primary goals that we have as their teacher is to help them learn life skills – skills that will allow them to become contributing members to their families, communities, and the greater society.
Because of their low cognitive ability and physical limitations, these students do not have the opportunity to experience many of the fun and educational activities that most other students enjoy. For example, travel to new places is an unreachable goal. We want to change that for our students, and you can help!
In March 2018, the S.P.E.C.I.A.L.S. group will visit Walt Disney World! For virtually all of our students, this will be the only time in their lives that they will visit some place as memorable and magical as Walt Disney World. We need your help to accomplish this dream!
Due to the various limitations and specific, individual medical and personal care needs of our students, we can't plan a “typical” school trip to Disney. This means the staff/student ratio is basically one-on-one. We also must arrange for a nurse practitioner to accompany us.
